Still going strong 25 years on

21 Sep , 2021

Based in North Tipperary, J Quigley Tyres has been providing its customers with an excellent service for a quarter of a century now. Irish Tractor & Agri touched base with Jamie Quigley recently to learn the ins and outs of what is a thriving business down in the Premier County.

Business is good these days at J Quigley Tyres and the plan for Jamie Quigley is to try and keep things that way right through to 2022.

Set-up 25 years ago, the company today services the tyre needs of North Tipperary and further beyond the region.

J Quigley Tyres offers its customers services in tyre supply, fit and repair for car, van, 4×4 – both agri and commercial – and also offers an excellent break down service for all of the above.

Irish Tractor & Agri caught up with director Jamie Quigley to learn all about the company – from its origins to the state of business today.

“We’re based in Ballinalick, Norwood, Nenagh, Co Tipperary and the company is established 25 years now,” he outlined.

“There’s just two of us here, with my father John working along with me, and our services would see us cover a lot of North Tipp, Mid Tipp and a bit of Limerick as well.”

Over the years, the company has grown its list of services to the point where it now offers its clients very much the full package.

As Jamie explained, the area from which they operate in has a strong agricultural community and sees them in contact with agricultural contractors on a daily business. Making summer time the busiest season of all.

“We work in tyre repair, fit and supply and have a 24-hour breakdown service as well,” he said.

“A lot of the breakdowns that we work on here would be Agri breakdowns, tractors, tankers and that. It always been a great area for Agri contractors with a lot of them doing dairy, tillage, silage and beef.”

Things have come a long way for this family business. Rewind back a quarter century and John Quigley was just getting started, having set-up his business venture after feeling that there had been a niche in the market for it at the time.

John was operating with one vehicle on the road – a car and trailer – and as soon as he was old enough, his son Jamie would be lending a helping where ever he could.

Jamie grew up learning the ins and outs of the business and, sure enough, he’d follow in his father’s footsteps when it came time to take over the running of the company.

“My father started this business in the early 90s and, to be honest, I’ve never really done anything else,” said Jamie.

“He built up a good customer base through the work he carried out and over the years the business has grown organically and built up a good reputation among customers.”

Today, business is strong even with all the challenges out there at the present time.

The Covid-19 pandemic, and the government restrictions which have followed to try and combat the spread of the virus, have affected businesses throughout the country.

Jamie is glad to report that J Quigley Tyres has not felt the same impact that other companies have felt over the past 12 months or so, and that things are busy down in Ballinalick.

“Business is good,” he said. “Thankfully, farming and Agri haven’t been badly affected (by the Covid-19 pandemic).

“I have noticed a bit of a difference with cars alright but, as far as agri goes, things are fine and business is good.

“Hopefully, things can stay that way for a while and our customers stay busy with work.”

J Quigley Tyres operate with a Volkswagen Crafter on the road which sees the company offering its services around north and mid Tipperary and also into Limerick and intends to operate a second breakdown vehicle in the coming months.

All the equipment necessary to service all tyre needs both big and small is on hand to make sure that customers can be guaranteed an efficient and prompt service every time.

So, what has been the secret to success for the Quigleys these past 25 years? How has a small start-up grown into a business with a good-sized customer base and a glowing reputation to go with it.

According to Jamie, service and competitive prices go a long way in this line of work.

“I suppose we try and look after them as best I can,” he stated plainly.

“Our customers have been very loyal to us and the service that we give them is good and our prices are competitive. I also try and keep down time to a minimum. We market ourselves through social media mostly and rely strongly on positive word of mouth from our customers. We are one of the main agents for Westlake tyres in North Tipperary and seeing great results from this premium quality tyre.

“Now until the end of the summer is generally our busiest period and, all going well, I’m expecting another busy summer here.”

As well as meeting the demand from customers, Jamie says he’s keen to grow awareness about the tyre finance option they can offer as well.

Looking towards the coming months, it’ll be a primary focus for J Quigley Tyres as the company continues to grow its customer base.

“This time of year, things are busy for us, so I suppose we’ll just look to keep up with the customer demand,” said Jamie.

“I also want to try and grow awareness around our tyre finance side of the business too. You could be spending thousands on tractor tyres nowadays, and having the option for tyre finance is something we have had a great response to and it offers the farmer a flexible option to spread the costs.”
