Growing from strength to strength

5 Jun , 2019

Based in Castlebellingham, Co Louth, Hoey Parts & Plant Sales has become well-known for its excellent service and quality products on offer. Irish Tractor & Agri heard all about the business from the store’s co-manager Aidan Matthews recently.

Hoey Parts & Plant Sales was set-up in 1984 by Tom Hoey and has since grown into a business with a glowing reputation when it comes to the products it carries.

Today, they are a wholesaler and retailer of replacement and genuine parts and accessories for the JCB Loadall & 3CX range. They also stock a wide array of modern and vintage tractors parts.

Right now Hoey Parts & Plant Sales employs six full-time staff, including Aidan Matthews, who has been working at the company for the same amount of years as one of two managers of the store in Williamstown.

Irish Tractor & Agri learned all about the business recently after he was good enough to take the time from an increasingly hectic schedule, which he highlighted by describing 2018 in general as “crazy”.

“We sell parts for and machinery for JCBs, Massey Ferguson, John Deere and we have everything here from batteries to oils to trailer lights,” Aidan outlined.

“We’ve a wide range of everything, including also hydraulic pumps and Hitachi track machines.”

Since the company’s inception some 34 years ago, it has moved from selling and repairing the Industrial MF range to becoming a leading worldwide exporter/importer of used JCB 3CX /Loadall equipment.

By 1996, the decision was taken to open up a parts counter in the store and, with the high demand for service and replacement parts, Hoey Parts & Plant Sales have grown from strength to strength.

At Hoeys, they pride themselves on having friendly and knowledgeable staff that try their very best to help out the customer whether it be for parts, sales, service, hire or just advice.

It’s something which has trickled down from the top over the decades, with Tom Hoey having grown his business from the ground up to the point where it is now.

The now 60-year-old is still as much a part of the company than when he first founded in 1984 – a company which will also sources items for its customers that it doesn’t keep in stock.

“Tom Hoey owns the business and he was the man that originally started it up,” said Aidan.

“His son Eddie is also here as a mechanic in the workshop and Tom himself is still involved on a day-to-day basis.”

Right now, Hoey Parts & Plant Sales carry more than 16,000 line items.

These include original and replacement parts for JCB, original and replacement parts for Hitachi, John Deere, Ford, Massey Ferguson, David Brown, Case, New Holland, Agricultural and industrial machinery, a wide range of wearing parts, paint, electrical and lighting products, along with batteries, oils and lubricants.

Offering such a wide range of products has been one of the secrets to the company’s success and, as they get set to hit the 35-year mark in Williamstown, there doesn’t seem to be any sign of a let up.

In fact, Aidan reports 2018 as being one of the busiest years at Hoey Parts & Plant Sales in a while.

“Business has definitely picked up a lot to be fair,” he enthused. “This year in general it has been crazy and you’d just have far more people buying machines and everything really.

“We have our website and that has us getting orders from the US and everywhere around the world. Our customers in Ireland are coming from everywhere as well. We have customers in Kerry, Mayo and Galway and then we have a lot of northern customers too.

“We’re online about three years now and the last two have gained us a lot of new customers through the website.”

An online service has certainly benefited the business but the recent success is clearly down to much more.

Having a reputation for an excellent service and quality products doesn’t get earned overnight and Aidan points to the company’s founder when asked why he thinks customers continue to choose Hoey Parts & Plant Sales first ahead of other competitors.

“I suppose we’d be well known and Tom himself would be well known all over,” Aidan enthused.

“He’s well liked and gives a lot of good advice to customers and clearly that’s something they value when they keep coming back here.”

Another draw for different types of clients all over the country is the fact that Tom is an avid collector of vintage tractors.

“That would be a big part of it too,” Aidan stated. “Tom probably has somewhere between 20 and 30 vintage tractors of his own.

“I also have a big interest in the vintage scene myself and recently restored a Fordson Super Major Tractor, it attracts people from all over and that’s never a bad thing when you have a store like this.”

All things considered, Hoey Parts & Plant Sales continues to grow from strength to strength and whether it’s parts, sales, service, hire or just advice that you’re looking for, the store’s staff will be able to accommodate you.
