No matter how experienced a farmer is, constant changes in the agricultural sector mean that they can always do with some advice in certain areas.
One area that has changed considerably in recent years is the tillage sector where technology, legislation and world markets have encouraged huge changes in farming.
Modern developments in agriculture has left farmers seeking knowledge and advice. Nonetheless, help can be sought from a variety of sources and when it comes to crop growing and production of top quality grain, look no further than The Cooney Furlong Grain Company. They have been offering their services to the farming communities in Wexford and surrounding areas for 27 years.
Founded in 1998, The Cooney Furlong Grain Company is a general agri-business company that provides a number of services to a large customer base. With over 50 years of experience in the agricultural industry between them, directors Kevin Cooney and Walter Furlong have a vast knowledge of the Agri-sector, which has helped them develop the business over the years.
This Wexford based company supplies all types of seed grain, fertiliser and Agri chemicals, while also supplying animal feedstuffs and all types of crop packaging.
Two years ago, the business expanded further into the retail sector as The Cooney Furlong Grain Company opened three outlets in Enniscorthy, Wexford and New Ross. These shops sell a range of items for the farm and home. New product offerings such as dairy supplies, animal health, feed, hardware, fuel, pet and equine supplies are part of the wide range of products now supplied by the three premises.
However, the company’s main core business is the assembly, drying and marketing of grain. An important part of this is the supply of seed, fertiliser and agrochemicals to their tillage customers. They also provide a high quality crop agronomy and animal nutrition advisory service to all customers. They supply a large portion of their grain to the brewing, malting and distilling industries.
For this month’s edition of Irish Tractor & Agri, we spoke to Purchasing and Marketing manager Maeve Furlong about the success of the business and about the lengths they go to in order to provide their customers with the best service possible.
“Walter Furlong and Kevin Cooney have many years’ experience in the industry and our main aim has always been to provide farmers with a quality product and service”, said Maeve.
The company has built up a strong customer base around the county, whom they work closely with them in order to produce quality crops on a yearly basis.
“We have a team of agronomists that work closely with farmers around the county, aiming to produce high yielding crops ever year. Quality is a key component of our business.”
Maeve revealed that The Cooney Furlong Grain Company is very much a progressive company and are consistently looking to future developments in farming.
“Walter has been at the head of recent developments and trials of Cover Crop systems, along with Germinal Seeds Ltd, which took place on his farm outside Enniscorthy recently and was well received by farmers. We like to think of ourselves as a forward thinking company and we are keen to try and improve the business in any way that we can”.
“We purchase an excess of 100k tonnes each year and are significant suppliers to the brewing, malting and distilling industries. Quality of grain and consistency of supply is what makes us different.
“We rely on our experienced technical team, but especially our growers to supply high quality grain to our company each year. Our Grain Pricing Structure is specifically set up to reward quality.
“Due to ongoing investment into what we see as a business with a positive future outlook, our overall storage capacity is 100,000 tonnes of grain. We are totally committed to the future of the grain growing in Ireland and will continue to work for our growers to find the best markets for your grain”.
Last year, saw sister-company, The Cooney Furlong Machinery Co. become the latest addition to the Vaderstad dealer network selling seed drills and cultivation equipment from the branch in Enniscorthy.
“We are excited at the prospect of dealing with such an established company of high end agricultural machinery. This end of the business has really taken off since launched in June of last year and it is something that we are looking to develop over the coming years.”
