The slurry storage system experts

29 Mar , 2018

Tank Storage Systems has been providing slurry storage and handling solutions to the agricultural and anaerobic digestion sectors for four decades. Experts in the supply and installation of Permastore slurry stores, storage tanks and handling systems for slurry and waste liquids, the Co. Kildare-based company continues to go from strength to strength by offering an unrivalled service to customers in Ireland and the UK.

These are exciting times for the family-run operation which has experienced a surge in business since the abolition of the EU milk quotas in April of last year. Three of its biggest recent projects have in Wexford, Cork and Kilkenny. The first in Wexford saw the installation of a one million-gallon underground mixing tank (200’ x 80’).

The tank is mixed using a Bauer umbilical pump with a 30Kw electric motor. The slurry is pumped down one of six pipelines with two mixing nozzles at the halfway point and far end. A pneumatic valve system allows the pump to switch from one pipeline to the other automatically mixing the entire tank in a three-hour cycle. The system operates once a week.

In Clonakilty, West Cork, Tank Storage Systems installed a pump at a piggery owned by Lisavaird Co-Op that can draw from two separate tanks and pump into three tanks. The pump’s ability to suck over long distances / height differentials means it can be installed in one place and pipes from different tanks are brought to it. There are hand valves for switching from each tank. This system is very handy if there are multiple tanks on site as the levels of slurry can be transferred from smaller tanks to the over-ground slurry store without the need for using a tractor agitator.

Another project for Glanbia in Ballyragget involved the installation of three covers on existing tanks used to store whey permeate. These covers are the same type of cover that can be installed on slurry store.

“We’re very busy at the moment,” Ben Sage of Tank Storage Systems is pleased to report.

“We’re doing a lot of work for creameries, co-ops, piggeries, meat factories and dairy farmers, and have a growing customer-base in the industrial sector as well, which includes local authorities. The lifting of the milk quotas has been good for business because bigger dairy herds has led to a greater need for slurry storage.”

Tank Storage Systems was set up in 1981 in Kilcullen, Co. Kildare by Englishman Graham Sage, who is joined in the business by his wife Anna, son Ben and five staff. Graham made Ireland his home after first coming here in the 1970s with the Howard Rotavator Company. Ben has been involved since returning from the UK three years ago where he gained a wealth of knowledge from working for the German company UTS Biogas, which is one of the world’s leading biogas firms, with more than 1,500 equipped biogas plants and almost 90 full turnkey plants.

Tank Storage Systems supplies new and used tanks for the agricultural market along with umbilical systems for slurry handling, pumps, hose and other ancillary products. The products offered include a range of over-ground tanks and tank covers as well as mixing, pumping and separation solutions for slurry and waste liquids. In addition to supplying these solutions, the company is happy to offer free consultation on how one of its systems could fit in with your existing installation. Tank Storage Systems can offer complete system solutions for slurry stores and digesters, including tank, cover and mixing and pumping system.

The company also offers a range of services for existing tanks, including tank inspections, tank refurbishment and repair, and dismantling of tanks and silos.

Tank Storage Systems is proud to fly the flag in Ireland for Permastore, which has long been recognised as the market leader in slurry store management and pollution control in other sectors. Permastore have a range of tank and silo designs that are engineered and manufactured to the highest international standards. These tank kits are supplied and installed by Tank Storage Systems nationwide.

Permastore tanks and silos combine the strength and engineering flexibility of steel with the corrosion resistance of glass. A wide range of tanks and management systems are available to suit any farm size. The systems installed by Tank Storage Systems have storage capacities ranging from 100,000 gallons up to two million gallons.

The slurry storage systems can be supplied with a complete package of tank, reception pit, pump, mixer, access ladder and platform. They contain farm waste safely and securely to protect water sources throughout the world. Above ground installation of the main tank means there is no risk of hidden damage or leaks, giving lasting peace of mind. They are safer too for children and animals than the traditional ground stores or slurry pits, which are highly dangerous and prone to leakages.

Tank covers are available at a low cost to significantly reduce odours and cut ammonia losses by as much as 90 per cent. The Aeromix product that Tank Storage Systems offers mixes and conditions slurry by injecting air into the base of the slurry store. Air is metered and injected into well-defined areas of the store, one area at a time. This system reduces ammonia and methane emissions, and removes the need for agitation, which has been the cause of many Irish farm deaths over the years.

Tank Storage Systems is also an agent for Albers Alligator slurry bags, which can provide up to 5,000m3 of problem-free slurry storage and are ideal for weak subsoil.

It goes without saying that this successful company only supplies products from manufacturers with a proven track record in quality and innovation.
