27 Aug , 2015

McCauley Trailers Ltd. / MAC Trailers is Ireland’s premier manufacturer of commercial and agricultural trailers, offering a one-stop shop solution from its well-appointed Toomebridge, County Antrim base. We met up with area sales manager Martin Rocks to take a closer look at this outstanding operation and to explore the vast range of products and services provided.

As Northern Ireland’s longest-established trailer manufacturer, MAC Trailers (t/a McCauley Trailers Ltd.) is the island’s leading manufacturer of agricultural and commercial trailers for the transportation of plant, machinery, equipment and aggregates. An in-house design team specialises in trailer customisation to suit individual requirements and works closely with customers to supply the exact product required.

MAC’s commercial range of trailers is manufactured to suit the specific needs of the customer whilst ensuring the most efficient and economic mode of transportation available. Individual requirements are reviewed in-house and a range of options ensures the trailer supplied meets the requirements of the customer.

Meanwhile, McCauley Trailers has also established itself as a manufacturer of high-quality and durable trailers for use with agricultural vehicles. Their range of tractor-drawn trailers is widely used in the farming and construction industries and includes low loaders, dump trailers, flatbed trailers, half pipe, tipping trailers, grain trailers, turntables, log, livestock and dropside trailers.

MAC trailers are built with brand new parts and meet all EU and exporting regulations.

MAC Trailers is the brand name of McCauley Trailers Ltd, encompassing the company’s agricultural, commercial and bodies range. Since its genesis more than six decades ago, McCauley Trailers Ltd. has evolved from manufacturing livestock trailers, plant trailers and bespoke, made-to-order trailers to producing one of the largest ranges of trailers available for commercial and agricultural vehicles.

McCauley Trailers Ltd. has established itself as a renowned worldwide specialist in trailer design and fabrication. The company has invested substantial resources in research, development and product innovation and supplies trailers to a wide range of companies in agriculture, construction, forestry, waste handling, quarrying, transportation and public utilities.

McCauley Trailers Ltd has an international market presence in more than 16 countries. Since beginning exporting in 2004, the Northern Ireland-based company has experienced considerable growth in export markets and has successfully set up partners in Finland, Norway, Denmark, Holland, Germany, Australia, America, Switzerland, France, Sweden, Belarus, Estonia, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Iceland, and Cyprus.

The ultimate one-stop shop experience is provided, including everything from design, cut, build and manufacture through to shot-blasting, paint, finish, PDI and delivery. The range of products and services provided is pretty unique, as Martin Rocks – area sales manager for Scotland and Ireland – intimates: “We are one of the few companies in Ireland that specialises in manufacturing both commercial and agricultural trailers. We manufacture a full range of agricultural trailers – dump trailers, balers, low loaders, grain trailers, livestock trailers etc. – and also the full range of commercial trailers for both artic bodies and tippers. Basically, any trailer a customer could possibly require, we will provide it.”

As the premier manufacturer of both ranges on the island, McCauley Trailers is ISO 9001 certified and all products meet EU type approval. A door-to-door delivery service is provided across the 32 counties.

“We manufacture a very strong standard range and also offer a bespoke option, which obviously takes a little more time,” Martin continues.

Down through the years, the Republic of Ireland has always been a very important market for MAC Trailers and this remains very much the case today: “It’s busy but has become more challenging due to the unfavourable exchange rate. The strong sterling isn’t ideal for us but we always endeavour to keep the price as competitive as possible. We look at the market and adapt to changes in the market and try to remain competitive at all times.

“But we never, ever compromise on quality. The quality and the high spec are constants and all of our trailers come with a full two-year warranty.”

On the back of its excellent products and services, the company is experiencing a prolonged period of continuous growth. At present, they provide employment to a team of 50 highly-qualified and -experienced personnel and the signs are encouraging that this figure will increase gradually over the coming months and years.

Looking to the future, Martin notes: “We are currently in the process of redeveloping and expanding the manufacturing facility, which will further increase our efficiencies moving forward. We are also looking at increasing and strengthening our product line.

“You have to change and adapt. We are constantly introducing new products and tweaking existing ones, embracing new ideas and new technologies. That’s one of the main reasons why we have been here for over 60 years. You assess what the customer wants, investigate whether or not you can meet these goals and then bring the product to market.

“There have been a lot of improvements and advancements in trailer manufacturing over the years and MAC Trailers have always moved with the times. For example, the industry has moved from 2D to 3D design, which customers can proof before the trailer goes into production to make sure they are going to get the exact specifications they require. That eliminates any issues that might arise after the trailer has been completed.

“Within the standard specs, there is an extensive options list for each trailer and customers can tailor them to suit their individual needs. The options are almost limitless – there are a number of versions within each standard spec and these can in turn be personalised with added lights or other features, painted to the customer’s required colours etc.

“At the end of the day, we provide our customers with the exact trailer they require and we pride ourselves on achieving complete customer satisfaction in terms of both the design and manufacture of the trailer and our aftersales service.”

Attention to detail lies at the heart of everything MAC Trailers do; this is why they have assumed a place at the forefront of Ireland’s commercial and agricultural trailer manufacturing markets.
