From Cork to Cushendall – Tyrone Forestry and Plant Maintenance have your forest machinery needs covered

7 Dec , 2020

Tyrone Forestry and Plant Maintenance is just three years in existence but is backboned by nearly 20 years’ experience in its field of expertise. The Tyrone-based operation provides a rapid response 24/7 emergency repair service for all makes and models of forest machinery covering the entire island of Ireland.

Proprietor Raymond McEnery is a specialist when it comes to servicing, diagnostics, hydraulics, ram seals and air con recharge of heavy duty machinery and his services are very much in demand at this point in time. In fact, taking his current workload into account, there aren’t enough hours in the day.

“Even now during Covid-19, I’ve been always getting work,” Raymond revealed to Irish Tractor & Agri. “My wife (Michelle) works with the NHS. She would be arriving home at 2.30am, and I was away out the door. There have been mornings where I’ve been eating my dinner at 5.30am in the morning!

“I didn’t think it would take off as well as it has,” he added when asked if he thought starting out back in 2017 that work would be this plentiful.

“As the man says, it’s a chance you take and sometimes it can pay off or sometimes it mightn’t. I thought it would take more time but I can’t complain and I’m very happy at the minute, it’s going well.

“When you’re starting off you are buying your own tools and parts, you spend a lot of money to get going. I cater for air conditioning, ram seals, servicing, hydraulics, building pumps, building track motors. Basically, anything to do with the machines – all servicing, welding and maintenance. Whatever needs to be done, I can do it.”

Two years’ working with the Forest Service Northern Ireland sowed the seeds for Raymond’s passion for working with forestry machinery.

“I always had an interest in diggers and harvesters but that got me more interested in it. Unfortunately, there was no opportunity locally so I went on and served my apprenticeship as a car mechanic. I actually won the Apprentice of the Year award and finished second in Northern Ireland.”

Contacts he made down through the years have also played a pivotal role in Tyrone Forestry and Plant Maintenance’s bright start.

“99% of work I do on my own but there is a friend of mine down the road here who does hydraulic pipes. If I need hydraulic pipes I go to him and then there’s a mate of mine in Cookstown who builds and tests pumps for me.

“The way I work is, if I go out to a machine and it’s broke, I do a diagnosis on the machine, what it needs. I then tell the man who owns the machine what’s required.  If they want the machine fixed there and then, they supply the parts, I supply the service.

“Robbie Brennan has been very helpful when it comes to getting parts for machines. I get parts off him there for different lads. Then Jas P. Wilson in Scotland, I get spares off them as well as McHale down in the south for Komatsu stuff or Ponsse.”

Distance is no object for Tyrone Forestry and Plant Maintenance when it comes to satisfying the needs of their customers. As Raymond says, “be it Cork or Cushendall, it makes no difference”.

This can do attitude has been instrumental in helping him establish a loyal client list which includes the likes of Dohertys Timber Haulage, PTS Contracts, TMF Shane Mulligan, Patrick Kelly (Ardee), Brolly Harvesting, RJ Woodland Services, AML Plant, Glenvale, Loane Construction, RJ Fukes Forestry Services, Glendale Tree Services, Bellurgan Park – Eddie Toner, Winters Renewables – Gavin Winters and the Forest Service Northern Ireland.

Members of the local farming community also avail of his services on a regular basis.

“I go wherever then work is and I haven’t heard anything bad back yet!” he laughed when quizzed about the feedback he receives from his customers “They’re still calling me to do jobs so that’s a good sign and the main thing from my point of view.

“Anybody that knows me, anybody that I do work for, will tell you I’ll spend all night on site to try and get them going. Anybody that knows me will say that.

“Like Ponsse rang me to go out and service a machine for them because their own lads weren’t available at the time. It’s nice to get a big outfit like that asking me to do work for them.”
