Breaking new ground with Massey Salvage

20 Jul , 2015

Celebrating 15 years in business, Ned Murphy Tractors Ltd in Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford has recently added another string to its bow with the launch of its Massey Salvage division.

Synonymous with the sales and servicing of Massey Ferguson tractors since 1999, Ned Murphy Tractors Ltd now boasts a salvage supplies section which has been receiving enquiries from as far away as New Zealand.
Massey Salvage is headed up by Ned’s two sons, Keith and Gary, who set up the division in response to a shortage of quality used tractor parts on the Irish market. Specialising in used Massey Ferguson parts only, the fledgling business was granted a permit to deal with end-of-life tractors a year ago which allows it to purchase end-of-life tractors, salvage and process them for parts to re-sell onwards.
“We decided to set up Massey Salvage because of the difficulties we were experiencing in sourcing good second hand parts in this country. It had got to the stage where we were sourcing most of our second hand parts from Holland,” Keith Murphy explains.
“Once we were granted our waste facility permit number, we got straight down to the business of breaking tractors. We take in tractors from all over Ireland and are now sending parts all over the world.
“We’ve put a lot into marketing and publicising this side of the business over the past 12 months and it’s starting to pay off for us. The public are now coming to us looking to sell their end-of-life tractors rather than us coming to them. It has really snowballed and we’re delighted with how things have gone so far.”
The Murphys break all types of Massey Ferguson tractors, including 8160, 3080, 3090, 6180, 6255, 5455, 6290, 3630, 3070, 3060, 8130 and many more.
“We are specialising in Massey Ferguson for the time being because their tractors are the ones we are most familiar with,” says Keith, whose father Ned has 40 years’ experience as a mechanic working on the MF brand.
“We have broken everything from a 1983 20620 to a 2008 5460. Ideally, we are looking for tractors such as the 390 upwards to current tractors in any condition. The business has been such a success to date that we are looking to expand our premises and perhaps take on new staff in the future. We have plans in the pipeline to build a 1,000 square metres storage unit which will have pallet racking to store the parts.”
Massey Salvage can supply you with virtually any MF part you are looking for, be it gearbox parts, hydraulic rams, wings or PTOs. There are many advantages to buying a used part, not least the fact that they are significantly lighter on your pocket.
“New parts, as we all know, are very expensive and a lot of people can’t afford them,” continues Keith.
“There are big savings to be made by buying used parts, usually about 50 per cent. Used parts, or ‘green parts’ as they are often referred to, are also more environmentally-friendly as they are being reused. Many of the parts we stock are as good as new. In addition, we offer a three-month warranty on all parts for peace of mind.”
With customers dotted throughout Ireland and all over the world (parts have been sold to customers in Holland, Polland, the UK, Tanzania, Romania, the US and Lithuania), it’s no surprise to hear that the majority of Massey Salvage’s spares are sold online. “Instead of customers calling in, we email them a picture of the part they are looking for. If they decide to buy it, we send it to them by courier. About 95 per cent of everything we sell is sent by courier,” he explains.
Ned Murphy had worked for Donohues – which was a well-known Massey Ferguson dealership in Enniscorthy and Dublin – for many years before setting up his own tractor sales company 15 years ago. The family-run business prides itself on experience and professionalism, having gained an enviable reputation for providing top-quality products and, in particular, Massey Ferguson parts from the 35, 135 and 390 right up to today’s powerful 8700 series.
MF has long been a firm favourite with Irish farmers and continues to be one the biggest selling brands, both new and second hand. As well as stocking a large range of high quality tractors and parts, Ned sells an extensive range of farm machinery and accessories, including diggers, dumpers, tractor loaders and brackets, tractor weights and tyres. Repairs and servicing is also provided.
The company’s highly-trained and knowledgeable sales team will be happy to deal with any query you may have. In short, Ned Murphy Tractors Ltd offers a complete service.
On Massey Salvage, Keith concludes by saying: “We were very anxious about how it would go at the start, but it has surpassed our wildest expectations. We welcome any calls from dealers or farmers wishing to sell end-of-life Massey Ferguson tractors and, of course, any enquiries about parts.”
