Machinery built to last by Wylie

13 Nov , 2015

Started from humble beginnings back in 1977, the name Wylie Engineering is synonymous with high quality agricultural and industrial machinery in Ireland. Offering the highest standard of quality and innovative machinery is at the core of the business according to director Ross Wylie.

Dungannon-based Wylie Engineering is an award winning business designing and manufacturing high quality agricultural and industrial machinery.
The company was established in 1977 by the current managing director Samuel J. Wylie and remains a wholly owned family business.

Ross Wylie joined his father’s company in May 2000 and, along with his brother, and fellow director, Gavin, he is helping to build on the family’s legacy.

Tracing the company’s roots, Ross revealed: “My father Samuel is a farmer’s son and he started out making agricultural machinery on the family farm. He purchased our current premises in 1985 and expanded the premises over the years.

“We currently employ nine but in the late 80s and early 90s, we employed over 50 at the height of the business. Then the BSE crisis hit in 1995 and the agricultural sector plummeted but the company successfully managed to overcome that hurdle and stay afloat.”

The modern purpose built factory comprises 30,000 sq. feet and is fully equipped with the latest design and manufacturing technology to produce quality agricultural and industrial machinery to meet market requirements.

The team at Wylie Engineering are no strangers to awards for their end products which includes highly innovative shear grabs (block cutters), silage grabs, buck rakes and grass toppers.

The company’s total dedication to innovation, excellence and quality is reflected in 12 awards that Wylie Engineering have picked up since 1989 including the award winning design for heavy-duty flail and rotor grass toppers.

Their unique designs for shear grabs (block cutters) is second to none while their ‘Auto-shear bucket’ is the jewel in their crown.

An evolutionary design based on the highly successful Wylie shear grab, the ‘Auto-shear bucket’ possesses the added benefit of being able to handle fine cereal and powder or granule type materials.

In today’s farming practice added fine materials are increasingly recognised as advantageous to feed dairy and beef animals.

Under normal conditions the farmer has to cut silage with a shear grab and then use a separate bucket to handle loose material. This requires two machines and the extra time to change between the two.

The Wylie “Auto-shear bucket” simplifies the total job by handling both operations.

“The Auto-shear bucket is unique to Wylie Engineering,” adds Ross, “no one else in the UK and Ireland has it and it is sold all over Europe and Argentina.”

The “Auto-shear bucket” utilises an additional hinged flap plate which when in the raised position will allow the “Auto-shear bucket” to operate as a silage cutting shear grab.

The hinged flap plate can then be dropped by activating a single acting ram to operate as a fully enclosed bucket to collect, transport and deposit fine “Blow-away” material or larger loose feed material.

The hydraulics of both front blade opening rams and the additional single acting ram (spring return  to operate hinged flat plate work on a simple single hydraulic circuit eliminating spool valves or any additional hydraulic requirement. The simplicity of design is reflected in the ease of use and serviceability.

Overall the “Auto-shear bucket” enables the farmer to work more efficiently lowering his daily operation costs. For a more in-depth look, type ‘Wylie Engineering Auto-shear bucket’ into YouTube to see for yourself.

The quality of Wylie Engineering’s machinery is reflected by their prominent position in the marketplace over the past 30 years.

Their attention to customer service is another secret ingredient in their winning formula and if there is any problem, large or small, they have always tried to resolve it to the best of our ability to the customer’s satisfaction.

“Thankfully, business is very good at the moment, we were very busy last year,” revealed Ross. “It’s a case of so far so good this year and we have plenty of stuff on order. Our customers are mainly dairy farmers and the milk price is good this year. When farmers have a wee bit of extra money in their pockets they are inclined to spend extra on machinery.

“There was also good grass growth last year and machinery was needed to manage that. There’s fierce competition out there and while our machinery may be on the more expensive side they are built to last.”
