A family tradition at Jeremiah Duggan Agricultural

17 Aug , 2017

Jeremiah Duggan Agricultural Contractor Ltd is one of Cork’s longest established farm contracting firms. Established in 1959, the family-run business provides a complete service, including silage cutting, corn harvesting, baling, slurry spreading, dung spreading, hedge-cutting, excavation / drainage work and stone crushing.

Operating from the middle of Dunmanway in West Cork, the company was set up as ‘Duggan Bros’ by brothers Jeremiah, Denis and Charlie a year after their father Jeremiah Snr tragically died in a farm accident.

They continued operating as ‘Duggan Bros’ until the mid-sixties.

By then the two younger brothers Mickie and Donie joined the company to replace Denis and Charlie who left to pursue other business interests.

Denis went into the quarrying business and Charlie concentrated on round baling which was very new at the time. Their only sister Sheila acted as mother, housekeeper and bookkeeper as they were left orphans in their teens, due to their mothers death in 1958.

The business was renamed Jeremiah Duggan Agricultural Contractor in the mid-sixties and is now managed by the three brothers Denis Jnr, John and Jeremy since the death of their father in 2003.

“I was only 20 when my father died and my brothers were a few years older, so we had to learn fast,” explains Denis Jnr. “While Jeremy, John and I are also suckler cow and beef farmers, our main focus is on the agri contracting business which continues to go from strength to strength. We are committed to providing a top-class service and complete customer satisfaction.”

Jeremiah Duggan Agricultural Contractor Ltd has an array of machinery to carry out your work quickly and efficiently, providing you with value-for-money and an alternative to investing in your own expensive equipment. The company’s success can be attributed to the knowledge, skill and expertise of its staff, as well as the quality of its machinery. Jeremy, John, Denis and their highly-skilled team deliver the value and quality farmers expect from the agricultural contracting partner.

The brothers run a modern fleet of 12 tractors, 10 of which are John Deere.

“We’re big John Deere fans and deal with John Murphy in Macroom for sales and servicing. They’re a reliable and economical tractor capable of carrying out on job on the farm,”  Denis says.

The John Deere models are a mixture of 6630, 6150, 6930, 6830, 6610, 3050, 3040 and 2850. Completing the fleet are a Claas Arion and a Ford TM175. Other plant / equipment operated by the company include two silage harvesters (a John Deere 7550i and a Krone BiG M 420), a John Deere 1172 combine harvester, two loading shovels ( a Komatsu 320 and a Caterpillar 910E) and two track machines (a 20-tonne Hyundai and an eight-tonne Hitachi).

The Duggan’s also run Herron, Broughan and Brennan silage trailers, a Kuhn five-furrow reversible plough, a Masco disc harrow, a Lemken power harrow and seeder, a Kuhn power harrow, a Red Rock 3,000-gallon slurry tanker, a HiSpec 2,500-gallon slurry tanker, a Fuller 2,500-gallon slurry tanker, an Abbey 1,600-gallon slurry tanker, a Marshall rear discharger dung spreader, McHale Fusion 3 and John Deere 755 combi balers as well as a McConnel hedge-cutter.

“We cut 3,000 acres of silage per year and about 1,000 acres which is baled,” continues Denis. “We pride ourselves on being able to offer a full agri contracting service. We do everything except for maize. We even specialise in stone crushing and have a creeper box and a big tractor for doing that. As far as I know, ourselves and Donal and Conor Murphy in Ballineen are the only agri contractors in Cork who do stone crushing.”

All machines are upgraded regularly to avoid breakdowns and downtime. There is no such thing as a quiet time for this highly-regarded contractor who will work around the clock during peak times to keep their clients happy. Jeremiah Duggan Agricultural Contractor Ltd works within a 20 mile radius of Dunmanway, taking in the surrounding areas of Ballineen, Bandon, Macroom and Drimoleague. The company retains long-time customers and attracts new ones by offering a professional, reliable, clean and value-for-money service.

“Our longest serving silage customer is with us for 45 years. That sort of loyalty speaks volumes for the quality of our service. Our drivers and service are second to none.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank our customers for their continued support. We look forward to providing them with the same great service for many years to come,” the affable agri contractor concludes.
