Operating out of south Kilkenny, Cahill Fabrication & Construction specialises in steel fabrication, shed erecting and concrete work. Irish Tractor Agri & Plant caught up with Sean Cahill recently to hear all about this thriving venture in the south east – from its origins to the projects it currently has on the books.
Business is good these days at Cahill Fabrication & Construction and the plan for Edward and Sean Cahill, and the rest of the team in Graignamanagh, Co Kilkenny, is to try and keep things that way for the foreseeable.
Since its inception more than 20 years ago, the company has erected farm sheds all around Kilkenny, Waterford, Wexford and Carlow and continues to do so as it averages around 20 sheds yearly.
Cahill Fabrication & Construction operates with a team of five full-time staff, with founder Edward Cahill overseeing the day-to-day operations alongside his son Sean and his brother John.
Sean Cahill took time from the company’s current busy schedule to fill Irish Tractor Agri & Plant in on the details of this family business and also discuss why he feels its customers choose it first ahead of other competitors out there.
“My father would be working for himself 25 years at this stage. I came on board about five years ago,” he outlined.
“It’s shed and concrete works that we do here and about 75% of it would be agricultural work with farm buildings, slatted tanks and sheds. We do a bit of commercial work for building companies as well on sites and stuff. You don’t get them too often though.
“We’d be travelling an hour from home for some places, so it’d be all around Wexford, Carlow, Waterford and Kilkenny that we’re covering.”
Indeed, Edward and his team have covered a lot of ground for customers over the years.
As for the origins of Cahill Fabrication & Construction, they travel back to a time when Edward himself served his time at Cahill’s Truck Bodies in Graignamanagh.
“He worked there for a few years and then he would’ve been working away at home as well in the shed at the back of the house in the evenings,” Sean outlined.
“After that, he got into making sheds and that’s probably 20 years ago now that he started making sheds. He has never really looked back since then.
“There was the two of them in it – my father and his brother (John). He worked for him and they used to get another lad with them if they were at a big shed.
“I served my time as a carpenter and, when the Covid came that time, I started with the business then. We saw an opening there to start doing the work that we’re doing now and, thankfully, it’s been going well since.”
Through the years, Cahill Fabrication & Construction has become a trusted name in the construction and steel fabrication industry.
With years of hands-on experience and a dedication to quality workmanship, the company has established itself as a leading provider of bespoke fabrication and construction services across the southeast of Ireland.
It offers a wide range of professional services that includes Structural Steel Fabrication (Design, manufacture, and installation of steel frameworks for industrial, agricultural, and residential buildings), Custom Metalwork (Fabrication of gates, railings, stairs, handrails, and bespoke metal projects designed to meet client specifications), General Construction Services (From groundwork and foundations to full building projects, ensuring durability, safety, and precision at every stage) and Maintenance and Repairs (On-site welding, metal repair, and structural enhancements for existing properties and facilities).
Needless to say, all of these services combine to keep Cahill Fabrication & Construction busy year-round.
“Business is very good,” said Sean. “People are getting us because we come in, we dig out the site and we can dig a tank and pour foundations.
“So they’re not chasing up people because it’s just us doing the work. They don’t have to worry about the concrete man coming back or the shed man coming back or vice-versa because we’re there and we do the whole job. Lads are keen on that as well because they’re not chasing up people.”
The company’s strong local reputation is built on reliability, transparency and a genuine commitment to customer satisfaction. From agricultural steel sheds to commercial structures and residential upgrades, Cahill Fabrication & Construction consistently delivers solutions that stand the test of time.
Right now, the team is immersed in numerous different projects around the south east and have more on the books for later this year.
“We’re doing a job at the minute in Thomastown which is a five-span tank and five-span shed over it which is for finishing cattle. It’s for Peter O’Hanrahan there and he’s big into calf to beef,” said Sean
“We done a retainer wall for Wicklow County Council for a job they’re carrying out in Hollywood, and we’ve a good bit of grant work on too and another five-span tank that we’re doing. We’ve a silage pit to do and another shed as well.”
He added: “You’d be talking around 20 sheds a year. You could do two or three in a month.”
So, all of that considered, the clear question is what has been the secret behind the company’s continued success over the best part of a quarter century?
Sean cites its competitiveness price-wise and bespoke services in the region as two of the leading attributes of this family business.
“We’re keen on price and we’re still a bit bespoke at the minute because a lot of other companies aren’t carrying out the work that would involve bringing a shed from ground all the way level up, including digging out a tank and doing both concrete and the shed work,” he said.
“It’s probably a little bit bespoke at the minute because there aren’t too many around our area doing all of those services at the one time.”
He concluded: “We’re expanding the whole time as well. We bought a new tractor back at the tail end of 2025 and that added to it. It’s a John Deere 6170R which we bought off PSD Agri in Goresbridge who we do a good bit of work for too. We’ll probably add a new mini-digger soon as well, so things are going well and there’s plenty on for us at the moment.”
Fantastic to hear.
