Tanner Tyres celebrates successful first five years

4 Jun , 2025

Celebrating five years in business, Tanner Tyres is a one-stop shop for all your agri, truck and quarrying equipment tyres and repairs in West Cork.

Founded in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic in May 2020 by Blaine Tanner, the Newcestown, Co. Cork-based company quickly established itself as a leading independent tyre retailer in the region by stocking a wide range of brands to suit every budget and offering an unrivalled service. In addition, Tanner Tyres provides a fast and reliable 24-hour breakdown service for its customers who are primarily involved in farming, quarrying and haulage.

“In five years, we’ve sold a substantial amount of tyres,” enthuses Blaine, who at 31, is an old head on young shoulders.

“We wouldn’t be where we are today without the support and loyalty of our customers. The support I’ve received from locals from the beginning has been brilliant. I was very lucky when I started in that the agri and transport sectors were considered to be essential services and were still moving. Most of the other sectors had ground to a halt due to the Covid restrictions that were in place at the time.

“It’s always a risk to start your own business, and even more so in the middle of a pandemic. But having spent four years learning the trade with Sean O’Connell Tyres in Crossbarry, I felt the time was right to go out on my own and thankfully I haven’t regretted it.”

Blaine adds: “We cover a wide area from Cork city down as far as Bantry and everywhere in between. We pride ourselves on our quality products and top-class service. Our primary concern, however, is the safety of our customers, hence the importance of choosing the right tyre to suit your vehicle and the way you drive it.”

While Tanner Tyres essentially provides a mobile service, Blaine plans to open a fully-operational depot in the near future. For now, however, he remains focused on growing the mobile side of things and has invested in a second fully-kitted out van dedicated to onsite and roadside repairs.

“We recently took delivery of two new Maxus vans from Denis & Mary Ryan Car Sales in Bishopstown. We’ve taken on an extra person to man the second van. At the moment, we only carry out repairs and fittings after hours at our Newcestown base, but the plan is to open it on a full-time basis eventually,” he explains.

Tanner Tyres offers a wide range of tyres and associated products from budget to top-of-the-range. It has been a main agent for Ascenso agri tyres in West Cork since June 2022 and stocks a full range of economy, mid-range and premium tyres for tractors, trucks, trailers and quarrying equipment. Ascenso has proven to be extremely popular with many of Blaine’s customers. The Indian brand’s aim is to provide farmers and agri contractors with long-lasting tyres that are specially designed for a variety of farming applications and for a variety of conditions. They also come with a seven-year warranty.

“They’re a good, mid-range and reasonably-priced tyre which have proven to be a great seller for us. We had a stand at the Clonakilty Agricultural Society Show last summer where we showcased the full Ascenso range and people were very impressed. The traction is particularly good,” Blaine says.

“We also supply all the leading premium brands such as Michelin, Bridgestone and Pirelli. When it comes to trucks, CEAT, Bridgestone and Pirelli are the most popular brands, while Goodride and Aeolus are especially suited to loading shovels and other quarry-related machinery. We always have a good stock of tyres, so we won’t leave anyone stuck. It’s all about giving customers the service they want.”

Tanner Tyres has built up an impressive client-base in the agri, plant hire and haulage sectors which includes Tony O’Mahony Agri, David Hill Plant & Agri, Eoin Cooney Agri, Con O’Connell Transport and Keohane Readymix to name but a few.

“It’s all down to repeat business and the support of existing and new customers. We’re at our busiest in the summer when the silage season is in full swing. The quarrying and haulage sectors keep us busy for the rest of the year. There are always nails and screws lying around yards, sites and sand pits which can result in punctures. Our goal is to keep the wheels of your business moving at all times and to keep downtime to a minimum.”

As Tanner Tyres continues to go from strength to strength, the affable managing director would like to take this opportunity to thank his clients and suppliers for their continued support.

Here’s to the next five years and many more!
