With an appetite for hard graft and a desire to be his own boss, Stephen set up his business six years ago at the tender age of 16 and it is fair to say that it is very much a case of so far, so good.
Customer satisfaction underpins the 22-year-old’s approach to his business, both from the agricultural contracting and haulage perspectives, and, as a consequence, his company has quickly developed a name as one that can be trusted when it comes to quality and reliability. Given the unpredictability and pressures of farming life, S Browne Contracting & Haulage is ready in hand with a full range of machinery and an experienced agricultural team of eight workers, available when they are needed to cover you when you need them most.
“I operated as a sole trader for the first couple of years,” Stephen informed Irish Tractor & Agri magazine. “I come from a farming background, my daddy John runs a dry stock family farm. I decided to go out on my own, in both contracting and haulage, and it has just been getting busier every year since. I set up the limited company and we have just grown from strength to strength.”
Based in the sunny south east, farmers from a wide catchment area, which includes Meath, Kildare, Carlow, Kilkenny, Wicklow, Laois and, of course, the Model County, benefit from the services of S Browne Contracting on a regular basis.
“I currently employ eight which can rise to 10 at busy times of the year. The extensive range of services we provide includes square and round bales and baling silage as well. We also do a lot of mowing and tedding and drawing in straw.”
Despite being just six years in existence, S Browne Contracting has fast become a first choice contractor all over Leinster and have built up a loyal customer base. They pride themselves on their quality workmanship and reliability when it comes to timekeeping.
“We carry out work on behalf of the same customers every year and successfully add two or three more each year. The contracts keep getting bigger which is a sign that they are more than happy with the work we do.
“I find that once the work is being done to their satisfaction and there are no issues, everyone is happy. We put in the hours when the work is available to make sure our customers are happy.”
To help maintain their high standards and always achieve the best results for their clients, Stephen has assembled an impressive fleet of tractors and associated machinery. There is no job too big or small for their hard-working enthusiastic team.
S Browne Contracting currently operate 3 tractors (2 New Holland and a Case), 2 McHale square balers, 2 Kverneland rakes, a 414 JCB loader and a recently purchased Smith trailer.
“We pride ourselves on getting the job done and if that involves going over and above the call of duty then so be it. I’m constantly upgrading the machinery and will be looking to purchase a new square baler this year. The way I look at it is – If I run one baler, I can keep one customer happy but if I have three, then I can keep three happy.”
It was very much a similar story when the conversation turned to the haulage side of the business. S Browne Contracting & Haulage offers a professional and reliable service in road haulage. It has its own fleet of lorries and is fully insured, specialising in the haulage of refrigeration, flat bed, curtain sider and tipper trailers.
Stephen’s haulage clients include many well-known companies, operating in and out of Ireland and the UK, and he has recently expanded into continental work.
