Youngs – The Farmers’ friends

6 Jan , 2017

The 2016 summer has been generally good for the farming community as there were plenty of windows of opportunity to get the seasonal work done.

It can be a hectic time for farmers as there is so much to do in a short space of time, and whether they do the work themselves or employ contractors to do it for them, one thing is certain, a reliable and efficient fleet of machinery is necessary on both counts.

New machinery costs big money and farmers seek the best deal possible when making a purchase and rightly so. This machinery needs to be kept in the best working condition possible, but from time to time, unfortunately breakdowns do occur and the main aim is to get the parts needed as quickly as possible and keep downtime to a minimum.

To source these parts, farmers and contractors alike need a reliable service to provide them with such items and the people of Portarlington, Co Laois and surrounding areas are fortunate to have one of the most experienced businesses in the sales and service of all leading brands of machinery in Youngs Garage.

Based on Bracklone Street in the town, this family owned business has been servicing a large customer base since Paddy Young first started trading in 1954.

These days Paddy’s son Francis runs the business and they have gone from serving the farmers with a mixture of tractors and combines to a wide range of farm machinery and parts.

“We’re in business here for the past 62 years and we have built up a fairly extensive customer base, many of who have been with us for years,” said Francis.

“There would be second and third generations of families coming to us with some of them dealing with my father since he first started. We’d be on first name terms with all our customers and they know that they will get an excellent service when they come through the doors.”

Francis revealed that their parts department does be particularly busy during the summer months and it is essential to have it well stocked.

“We would have a large parts department and we try to keep everything in stock, but if there is something that a customer wants and we don’t have it, we will have it here within 24hrs.

“We know how frustrating it can be when machinery breaks down and we will do our best to help them as efficiently and quickly as possible.”

Youngs are stockists of all the leading brands in farm machinery including Deutz-Fahr, Hardi, McConnel, Bogballe, Nugent, Major and Kverneland.

“We would stock all the leading brands and are dealers for them. The makes and models we sell are very popular amongst farmers. We have been selling Fahr combines since the 1960s when my father sold his first one.”

It is plain to see that Youngs like to offer the personal touch which is much appreciated by their customers, and the six employees have the experience to deal with any queries that a customer might have.

“There are two in the stores and four in the workshop, most of who have been here for a good few years now and like I said earlier, the customers know that they will be looked after when they come in here.”

Another string to the Youngs bow is the fact that they are the only dealership in Ireland that offers a Deutz-Fahr C9206TS Demo Combine to show potential customers.

Deutz-Fahr is a brand that invests massively in technology. Its goal is always to supply the farmer with state of the art but reliable agricultural vehicles that facilitate his work and maximize his productivity. This is a mission which the company carries out with the utmost determination and pride.

The Deutz C9206TS gives output with an exceptional sample. A Turbo separator, twin re-threshers and unique intake gives an even crop flow through the combine culminating in high ton/hr and even straw sward.

The sward of straw is excellent and sits on top of the stubble which is ideal for drying. Sward dimensions and profile will please the baler operator.

When it comes to fertiliser spreaders, Bogballe is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of fertiliser spreaders. 365 days a year they work on developing technique for spreading of mineral fertilisers – a technique that through generations has been a passion.

The Hardi name is synonymous with sprayers and has been for the best part of 50 years now. New products are always coming on the market as they continue to manufacture high quality sprayers.

“When it comes to combines and farm machinery in general, we feel that we have the experience to ensure that the customer gets exactly what they are looking for. We’ve been selling combines since the sixties and I feel we are well placed to offer expert advice on them.”
