Health and Safety is paramount nowadays so when it comes to farm hygiene and sundries, protective clothing, footwear and hand protection, look no further than Armagh-based Scully Grower Supplies, a market leader in supplies to the agricultural and food industries.
Scully Grower Supplies is one of the country’s premier agricultural supplies companies and their aim is ‘to provide a top quality affordable supplies service to growers all over the island of Ireland’.
Catering extensively for the Irish market, their product range includes chemicals, sundries, protective clothing, footwear, safety products and hosing and they offer several well known successful brands including Shield, Hydrowear, Goliath and Moldex.
Customer service is one of the key ingredients of their winning formula and this is underpinned by over 35 years experience in the mushroom industry.
Sean Scully started off as mushroom grower in 1969 at his farm in Co Armagh and, along with his son Neil, he branched out to set up Scully Grower Supplies in 2000.
Together they spotted an opening in the market and decided to take a gamble on establishing their own supply business. So far it has paid off, as 15 years on, the Scully family continue to provide a reliable van service to mushroom growers throughout Ireland and are widely regarded as one of the most successful suppliers to the mushroom industry.
“We know what is expected of us,” Neil pointed out to Irish Tractor. “That’s a big advantage we have over our competitors.
“Our family were heavily involved in the mushroom growing industry for 30 years, I grew up in it. The opportunity arose to go into the supply end of things, we took it and it has gone well ever since. We have no regrets.
“Customer satisfaction is very important to us and we source quality products from all over the world to ensure this. We also provide swift next day delivery throughout Ireland and offer a prompt and reliable next day delivery service to all our customers.”
The family-run business (Neil’s sister Séanéen looks after the administration end of things) are firm believers in the personal touch when it comes to dealing with their customers.
Neil clocks up the mileage visiting their customers’ yards on a regular basis as offering the highest standard of sales and after-sales, coupled with quality products at competitive prices, is at the core of their business.
They above all try to ensure that every customer they deal with is 100% satisfied and if there is any problem, large or small; they have always tried to resolve it to the best of their ability and to the customer’s satisfaction.
“It’s a competitive market out and there but we believe we are hard to beat when it comes to the quality of our products and the reasonable prices they are available at. You could sell rubbish at a cheap price but from our own experience growing mushrooms that wouldn’t get you anywhere and when you’re down in a man’s yard he won’t be long in throwing that back at you.
“We always strive to go out of our way when it comes to customer service. If a customer is stuck we’ll always go out of our way to dig him out of a hole. Our customers have been very loyal to us down through the years and we like to repay that loyalty where possible.”
Not known for resting on their laurels, the Scully family have ambitions to diversify into other markets in the coming months.
“Basically all our products at the moment are geared towards mushroom farmers and help eliminate any problems with supermarkets. There are plenty of products out on the market that will get mushroom growers in trouble with supermarkets etc. The horse meat scandal led to even more strict checks on food production units. Everything even down to the disinfectant used to wash out a tunnel is under scrutiny and we offer disinfectants which are totally traceable right back to the raw ingredients used, which gives the grower peace of mind.
“Business is going well and we stock a large range of head-to-toe Health & Safety equipment such as full safety and respiratory equipment, hi-vis jackets, boots, Wellingtons and gloves We can tap into the vast health and safety knowledge provided by my brother Conor who is the owner of Scully.ie, a health and safety clothing and equipment wholesaler who brings in quality products from all around the world.
“We have plans in place to dip our toes into other markets. Unfortunately the small mushroom grower has been forced out of the market in the last 10 years. Major investment was needed to survive as the big farms got bigger.
“When we started we had 500 farms on our books, now 80. Farmers would look after the farming in the morning and grow mushrooms in the afternoon but farms are more specialised nowadays and we have to move with the times. Working closely with Grower led groups such as C.M.P and Northway have meant growers can avail of group prices and group advice. And we feel this has benefited the mushroom industry greatly in Ireland.”
