Slaney Foods International has retained the prestigious Origin Green Gold Membership from Bord Bia in recognition of the company’s commitment to sustainability. Gold Membership is the highest recognition awarded under the Origin Green programme and is reserved for companies that demonstrate an exceptional annual performance on their sustainability targets based on the assessment of Origin Green’s independent verification authority.
Companies are assessed on their performance in areas such as raw material sourcing, water and energy efficiency, waste reduction, packaging and social sustainability. Slaney Foods was one of the first verified members of Origin Green and achieved Gold Membership for the first time in 2020.
The company has made significant achievements in the areas of energy and waste usage efficiencies, water recycling and reducing its carbon footprint. Slaney Foods has achieved zero waste to landfill while also reducing the amount of general waste and increasing recycling across its site in Bunclody, Co. Wexford.
The company is working continuously to find ways to reduce the amount of water, energy and carbon it uses, through various projects associated with Lean manufacturing.
Rory Fanning, Managing Director, Slaney Foods International, said: “I wish to acknowledge the work of the Slaney Origin Green team and all our company employees in retaining Gold Status in Bord Bia’s Origin Green sustainability programme. All of us in Slaney, along with our farmer suppliers, are very aware of the responsibility we have to produce healthy nutritious food for customers worldwide while protecting and sustaining the environment for our children and future generations.”
Recognition of the company’s achievements extends to include Social Sustainability. Bord Bia noted exemplary performance under this target following a number of initiatives developed for all staff to enjoy through the year.
Origin Green is Ireland’s pioneering food and drink sustainability programme, operating on a national scale, uniting government, the private sector and the full supply chain from farmers to food producers and right through to the foodservice and retail sectors. The programme is the world’s only national food and drink sustainability programme, and enables the industry to set and achieve measurable sustainability targets that respect the environment and serve local communities more effectively.
