Brian Murphy Agri Ltd is a leading agricultural contracting firm based in Kinvara, Co. Galway. Specialising in baling, slurry spreading, excavation, reseeding, hedge-cutting and fencing, it offers a comprehensive service to a large customer-base.

Trading since 2004, the family-run business became a limited company two years ago and continues to go from strength to strength. Founder and managing director Brian Murphy runs the company from the townland of Carrowgarriff near Kinvara, which is only a stone’s throw from where he was brought up on the family farm and where his father Bernard still milks 50 cows. A qualified dairy manager, Brian rents about 140 acres of land in the area to cater for his own suckler herd.

Committed to providing a top-class service and complete customer satisfaction, Brian has a wide range of machinery to carry out your work quickly and efficiently, providing you with value-for-money and an alternative to investing in your own expensive equipment. The success of Brian Murphy Agri Ltd is down to the knowledge, skill and expertise of its staff, as well as the quality of its equipment. The company delivers the value and quality farmers expect from their agricultural contracting partner.

Having started out with a John Deere 6520 tractor, round baler, baler wrapper, bale trailer and slurry tanker, Brian now operates one of the largest contracting fleets in the West. He runs nine John Deere tractors, including a brand new 210hp 6175R which was purchased from Geary’s Garage in Clarecastle, Co. Clare. There are also 6930s and 6830s in the fleet as well as a 6510 and a 6920.

Other plant / equipment operated by the company include three Hyundai track machines (ranging from 14 to 22 tonne), five McHale Fusion balers, four Krone and Kverneland mowers, a 3,000-gallon Hi Spec tandem axle tanker, three 2,500-gallon Hi Spec slurry tankers, Pottinger and Claas silage rakes, a Pottinger tether and power harrow, a pair of slurry agitators, Pottinger and Amazone disc harrows, five dump trailers, a Guttler greenmaster seeder, a McConnel 6500T telescopic hedge-cutting machine, a Keenan dung trailer and a low loader. Brian also has a flailing saw that can be attached to the McConnel hedge-cutter or one of the track machines, and a Cross post driver.

All machines are upgraded on a regular basis to avoid breakdowns and downtime. Servicing and maintenance is carried out in-house, while machines in need of bigger repair jobs are sent to Geary’s Garage, McHale Farm Machinery or MH (Martin Howley) Motors in Ardrahan.

“We try to keep our machines fresh and looking well. We take great pride in the appearance of our tractors. The latest addition to the fleet (the John Deere 6175R) is going like a bomb; we are running double mowers off it. Thomas McMahon looks after most of the maintenance in our workshop,” explains Brian, who is married to Fiona and has three children between the ages of eight and two – Clodagh, Roisin and Patrick.

There are eight full-time staff employed in the business, including Brian’s brother Keelan, who is the hedge-cutting specialist and plays a big part in the business. The other members of the Murphy team are Noel Davis, Patrick Dooley, Liam Geraghty, Mark Jordan, Aaron Staunton, David McMahon and the aforementioned Thomas McMahon.

“They’re all capable and reliable lads who have a passion for farm machinery and are on first-name terms with our customers. During peak times, we take on an extra five or six fellas,” Brian continues.

The contracting firm has a large and loyal client-base within a 25-mile radius of Kinvara, encompassing Loughrea, Athenry, Gort, Ardrahan and Oranmore. With the possible exception of November and December when they take the opportunity to catch up on some essential maintenance work, the Murphy team is always busy. In the early part of the year, the focus is on slurry spreading. The baling season gets underway in April and runs until September. This is a particularly hectic time for the staff who will work around the clock to keep their clients happy. It’s followed in the autumn by hedge-cutting and more slurry spreading. The company’s excavation and fencing services are in demand all year around.

We started baling this year on April 17 for a customer who has four cuts of silage every year. Our customers, 95 per cent of whom are farmers, choose us time and again because we provide a complete service at an affordable price. We guarantee a good, clean job that’s done right every time.”

The affable agri contractor / suckler farmer concludes by saying: “We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our customers for their support over the last 12 years. We look forward to working with and for them for many more years to come.”
