Hard to beat 35 years experience

7 Oct , 2015

Brehony Peat Products of Killimor, Ballinasloe, Co Galway celebrate the magnificent milestone of 35 years in business in 2015. Always delivering a first class agricultural contracting service with well maintained and up-to-date equipment has been one of the secrets behind their longevity according to Dermot Brehony

Brehony Peat Products of Killimor, Ballinasloe have been providing a professional agricultural contracting service to farmers within a 10 mile radius of Ballinasloe for the last thirty-five years.

A lot of hard work and sweat has been the foundations on which the growth of Brehony Peat Products has been built.

Dermot Brehony started the business from humble beginnings, along with his father Martin, back in 1980 and today they are renowned for providing an extensive range of agricultural services.

Specialising in moss peat sod exports, turf cutting and sales as well as silage cutting and site excavation, although not originally from a farming background, Dermot’s interest in machinery sowed the seeds for the setting up of the business all those years ago.

“I worked with Priority Drilling for three to four years,” he recalled in conversation with Irish Tractor magazine. “My father had an old digger at the house and I had an interest in machinery. We started off with a tractor and a second hand harvester.”

Together Dermot and Martin developed the business from modest beginnings and gradually built up an extensive fleet which today consists of five John Deere and two New Holland tractors as well as associated machinery.

In 1997, Dermot branched into turf cutting and six years later took the decision to purchase a bog 35 miles away in Roscrea, Co Tipperary. A lot of his time these days is spent preparing moss peat sods for export to Holland.

At peak times during the summer months, Brehony Peat Products provides employment for 12 people while his son Diarmuid (16) is following in his footsteps and helps out when his school studies allow.

Dermot appreciates the fact that their customers have very demanding work schedules and that working with weather cycles can be difficult.

Therefore when you call Brehony Peat Products they get to work immediately scheduling specific machines with experienced operators and delivering them on time. Put simply, you can depend on them to meet those all-important harvest deadlines.

They boast a wide range of machinery to carry out their clients’ work quickly and efficiently, providing them with value for money and an alternative to investing in their own expensive equipment.

Dermot is approachable and ensures his customers receive personal attention regularly and, as a result, they boast a loyal customer base which is also testimony to the quality of their work.

Renowned for their diligence and reliability, no job is too big or small.

“I’d have to say we’re happy enough with how things are going. It’s tough going in this game but, in saying that, I enjoy it and you have to stay at it. I’m a good while at it now and I no nothing else!

“There are plenty of challenges out there with the price of fuel and the weather. A few good lads have gone out of business in recent years but we’re lucky to have loyal customers who have stuck with us and who are obviously happy with the service we provide.

“All of this would not be possible only for our loyal and dedicated work force.

“We look after the maintenance on all our machinery ourselves and it’s it’s vital they are well maintained. We’ve no plans for expansion in the future at this point in time, we want to consolidate things as they are.”

To this day the Brehony Peat Products has evolved to offer a whole range of agricultural services and operations to meet the needs of the progressive landowner and farmer.
