Guiness Farms Ltd / R.A Livingstone & Son merges dairy, beef, poultry and agricultural contracting service enterprises into one successful farming operation in Caledon, Co. Tyrone.
Established in 2020 by father-and-son Randal (Alexander) and Jack Livingstone, the farm encompasses approximately 700 acres, most of which is leased. While the farm spans three different counties – Tyrone, Armagh and Monaghan – it is all within a 10-mile radius and is expertly managed to ensure maximum efficiency.
“Caledon is in the Clogher Valley on the banks of the River Blackwater where the three counties meet. We’re only a stone’s throw from the border near Glaslough, which is famous for Castle Leslie,” says 21-year-old Jack, who is an old head on young shoulders.
“Guiness Farms, which takes its name from a local townland, is a partnership between my father and I. It has only been in existence for six years, but our family has been farming for three generations. My grandfather Wesley started at 14 when he was left a 30-acre farm and built it up from there. He drew straw all over Ireland and was renowned for that.
“My father Randal has been milking since 1980. He now has a 400-plus dairy herd which has been boosted by a new 60-unit Dairymaster Rotary Parlour that was installed by Cookstown Dairy Services. The system is designed to deliver efficiency, durability and smooth milking performance. Before 2020, we were milking 250 cows, so the dairy side of things has obviously expanded a lot since then.
“We supply our milk to Lakeland Dairies and place a strong emphasis on milk yield and quality, pregnancy rate, genetic improvement and animal welfare.”
Jack adds: “My father was previously a buyer for factories in local marts so, like my grandfather, he would be well-known in the farming community.”
Guiness Farms also rears heifer replacements and finishes about 250 calves to beef every year. Nearly all of their beef is supplied to Dawn Meats. In addition, the Livingstones house about 100,000 broiler birds in four units for Pilgrim’s Europe (Moy Park). Each system is managed in a way that benefits and complements the other sectors.
The agri contracting arm of the business also continues to go from strength to strength by providing an exceptional service to a local and loyal customer-base. The father-and-son operation offers a wide range of high-quality contracting services, including pit silage, umbilical slurry spreading, reseeding and crop spraying.
Committed to providing a top-class service and complete customer satisfaction, they have an array of machinery to carry out work quickly and efficiently, providing farmers with value-for-money and an alternative to investing in their own expensive equipment. Their success can be attributed to the knowledge, skill and expertise of their staff as well as the quality of their machinery. Randal and Jack’s highly-skilled team delivers the value and quality farmers expect from their agricultural contracting partner.
The Livingstones run an all-John Deere fleet comprising one 6215r, two 6r175s, one 6r155, one 6m155 and one 6145r. They also have a John Deere 9600i forage harvester with a 30R header as well as Krone mowers and rakes, a pair of JCB loading shovels and P Donnelly silage trailers.
“We’re very loyal to the John Deere brand and have been dealing with Johnston Gilpin & Co in Lisburn for years,” Jack explains.
“Robbie Hewitt was the first salesman we dealt with there. We dealt with Gethin Evans after that and now deal with Matthew Walker. We’ve forged an excellent relationship with them over the years. Our other machinery suppliers include McMullan Agri in Armoy, DS Logan Farm Machinery in Cullybackey, Clover Agri Sales in Lisburn, R Kennedy & Co in Ballymena, while we deal directly with Redrock and SlurryKat for slurry equipment.
“We recently bought a Krone Tc 1370 rake from McMullan Agri, a Kuhn VM123 five-furrow reversible plough from DS Logan and a Moore Bros Engineering 600m reeler from Clover Agri Sales. R Kennedy & Co supplied us with our two JCB loading shovels. On the stock side of things, Mason’s Animal Feeds in Portadown are our biggest suppliers.”
For slurry, Guiness Farms operate two Redrock tankers, two SlurryKat tankers and a SlurryKat umbilical pipe system with a 12m dribble bar. Tillage equipment includes Lemken power harrows, Joskin grass seeders, Amazone sprayers and the aforementioned Kuhn plough.
All machines are regularly maintained and serviced to avoid any breakdowns or downtime. The Livingstone team will literally work around the clock at peak times to get the work done and keep their clients happy. They retain long-time customers and attract new ones by providing a professional, reliable, friendly, clean and value-for-money service.
“We cut 1,300 acres of pit silage and 150 acres of maize for ourselves, and also dabble in whole crop silage. My grandfather was the first farmer in Northern Ireland to grow maize under plastic,” Jack proudly points out.
The young company director concludes by thanking his mother Dawn for looking after the books and the rest of the Guiness Farms team for their hard work, dedication and expertise. He would also like to take this opportunity to thank the company’s valued customers and suppliers for their continued support.
