Darmody Fencing is a long established fencing business in Co. Tipperary which is home to an impressive range of high quality fencing products and fencing services.
Situated on the old Dublin-Cork road, just outside Littleton in Co. Tipperary, Darmody Fencing has been committed to providing its customers with the ultimate in quality, service and value for over 25 years now.
It’s a family run business which was originally founded in 1989 by local farmer John Darmody and today Darmody Fencing is run by John and his wife Siobhan Darmody. As a team John and Siobhan have managed to establish a company which offers an impressive range of high quality products and services.
John started his training in Farm Management in 1983 in Palliskenry and then saw an opening in the market for a local Fencing Contractor. He started off with small bits of timber work and fencing with his good Friend Richard Brennan- who now also has his own successful fencing company – but with the help of his Parents, Gerry & Hannah Darmody, John started his work from his father’s farmyard, who is now in his 92nd year & still plays a huge part in the family run farm just across the road from Darmody Fencings workshop in Ballyerk.
“We supply and install a lot of Fencing for all different kinds of sectors such as Agricultural, Industrial, Commercial and Educational,” explained Sarah Slattery, who has been working with the company since 2000.
“We have an in-house sandblasting facility as well which we cater for anything from a wheel to a vehicle. We also cater for onsite blasting, and we have recently completed a large sandblasting contract under the supervision of TMB Plant Hire.”
This local fencing business employs five members of staff between the workshop and office but as Darmody Fencing has a huge range of products, during busy periods this number could easily double.
On the Agricultural side of things, Darmody Fencing are hugely involved in the drawing, supplying and erecting of many Agri Sheds around their parish of Moycarkey Borris and also much further afield. Cattle crushes also keep this family run business busy during the summer season as farmers begin to plan for the winter.
Offering such an array of different services comes down to John and his own background before setting up the company 28 years ago. The Two Mile Borris native is renowned for his professional approach and it is this approach which has seen Darmody Fencing grow from strength to strength to where it is now.
The company grew very quickly and over time John had to adjust and change the business plan to cater for a growing market. He has since diverted into different types of business, while keeping Darmody Fencing running and the big numbers on his own livestock farm, John is also a local publican in the neighbouring village of Littleton.
Of course Darmody Fencing were not immune to the infamous economic crash. The recession hit and according to John it still hasn’t passed. He does, however, accredit Darmody Fencing making it through the Bad times to their good, loyal and solid customer and supplier base.
It was then that Darmody Fencing noticed fencing and shed sales dwindle and decided something had to be done. The business plan had to be adjusted and it was then where John and his team decided to expand out and begin supply and erecting GAA Goalposts and Ballstops.
“We recently became involved with many GAA clubs around the country, supplying and erecting ballstops, junior and senior goalposts, spectator seating and ground fencing, Including clubs like Carrigaline GAA and Crosshaven GAA in Cork, St. Thomas’, Galway , St Marys Wexford, Dunboyne GAA, Craobh Chiaran in Dublin and Moycarkey Borris here in Tipperary,” said Sarah.
From there, things grew and now Darmody Fencing offers the full package when it comes to fencing in that they can offer advice, design, manufacture and installation to the developers, builders, specifiers, landscapers and retail sectors.
As well as all that, they carry a full range of tools and equipment in their retail showroom for the DIY enthusiast so that they would only have to deal with one company.
Agri customers avail of Darmody Fencing’s services as they supply a large range of fencing posts and strainers in a variety of different sizes and timber such as larch, imported pine, Douglas Fir, Swedish Redwood and many more.
With regards to wire fencing, they stock a large range of high tensile fencing wire to suit the farmer’s requirements, such as sheep wire, barbed wire, high tensile electric wire and rabbit netting.
Darmody Fencing also supplies a large range of Electric Fencers, including mains, battery & solar operated suitable for all types of fencing. The main creosoted fencing products are creosoted fencing stakes, creosoted fencing strainers and creosoted octo posts.
Creosoted fencing is suitable for agricultural and stud and domestic fencing. While an array of different services helps, Darmody Fencing believe that their success is based on differentiation through innovative design, quality materials and craftsmanship in addition to superior customer service.
Sarah has been part of the team at Darmody Fencing for 17 years now and credited Darmody Fencings success down to their local customers also.
“First and foremost, they (our customers) get a good service from us and then we’d like to think as well that we’re very competitive when it comes to our prices,” she outlined. “You have to be there for your customers to help them out when they need you and we feel that we do that well here. The big thing for us though is the service.” And the service continues to be second to none at Darmody Fencing.
The great customer service that Darmody Fencing is renowned for can be put down to the long term members of staff, including Both Aidan Hartigan and Jimmy Meaney who have been working in Darmody Fencing for nearly 20 years now.
So what’s next for the company? John and his team are constantly trying to keep on top of the fencing game, while constantly working on growing their customer base by looking to provide more and more to their clients. John is also very keen to do more research into the sandblasting aspect of things, looking and improving and maximizing their sandblasting service.
