18 Oct , 2024

Country Crest and Tesco Ireland have committed to their future partnership a further with a multi-year contract extension for the supply of potatoes, onions, and sweet potatoes to all Tesco stores nationwide and for online shopping.

The contract, worth nearly €100 million, solidifies the strong partnership the retailer has had with the North County Dublin operation for the past 28 years.

Country Crest, the fourth-generation agri-business led by Gabriel and Michael Hoey, will continue to grow, and pack all Tesco own brand fresh potatoes, onions and sweet potatoes for Tesco Ireland. The agreement, until September 2027, will see Tesco source over 27,000 tonnes of fresh produce annually from Country Crest.

Country Crest employs more than 100 people at its production site in North County Dublin and sources directly from farming families across Ireland. This latest contract extension will see Country Crest supply:

•    Over 30,000 tonnes of potatoes sourced on a yearly basis including Rooster, Maris Piper, Queens, organic, baby varieties and signature Tesco finest* roosters
•    Almost 6,000 tonnes of onions crossing eight varieties including brown, red and shallots
•    Over 1,000 tonnes of sweet potatoes concentrating on the Covington variety

Reacting to the contract extension, Joe Manning, Commercial Director, Tesco Ireland, said, “This latest contract extension is strong evidence of our support for Irish producers, and will give confidence to growers nationwide during what is a challenging time for the sector.  We’ve worked with Gabriel and Michael and the team for 28 years. They are well known for their passion for authenticity, innovation and delivering the best quality produce for our customers.

Commenting on the deal, Country Crest Director, Gabriel Hoey, said “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to expand and enhance our supply partnership with Tesco Ireland. This provides our company, our employees, and our community of skilled growers with a great sense of security for the future.”
