Boyd Haulage: for all your rendering needs

27 Oct , 2016

The disposal of category one meat and bonemeal is the single largest issue facing the rendering industry on a daily basis.

It is a complex industry that requires every ‘T’ to be crossed and every ‘I’ to be dotted before a business can perform its duties. The legislation regarding the collection of fallen animals has forced ‘rogue operators’ to cease trading much to the delight of those that do everything by the book.

The collection of fallen animals is a specialised job that sees operators adhering to stringent regulations and legislation.

Mid Ulster based company Boyd Haulage is a family run business that specialises in the collection of fallen animals for the past 11 years.

Since 2005, the company has worked closely with the Northern Ireland Department of Agriculture and they are official collectors for the Government body.

Boyd Haulage is a family run fallen stock, animal by-product and food waste collection business serving farms, food processing/retail outlets, and the wider agriculture industry.

Boyd Haulage covers throughout the mid Ulster region, covering the likes of Antrim, Derry and South Tyrone with their five trucks on the road on a daily basis.

According to Adrian Boyd who runs the company, they have a big customer base that not only includes farmers, but butcher shops and other businesses connected to the industry.

“We are quite busy at the moment. In this line of work, you can be very busy during periods and quieter than during certain months. Usually between the months of October into the Spring would be our busiest period,” said Adrian.

“All of the fallen animals that we collect are brought to Foyle Proteins where they are disposed of according to department regulations. There is a massive amount of paperwork and procedures to be followed but they are for the benefit of the industry.

“We are fully licensed by the Department of Agriculture (DARD) and the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, the Maghera based Boyd Haulage takes pride in providing a fast and efficient service to agriculture clients throughout mid-Ulster.”

The company provide a number of services to a large customer base and the services include Fallen Stock collections from farms; Animal by-product collection from food processors and retail outlets; Food waste collections from processors and retail outlets.

To carry out their duties on a daily basis, Adrian admits that they are fortunate to have loyal and hard working employees.

“We would have a very loyal staff, some of who have been with us for many years now. They are on first name terms with our customers and they have been sympathetic with the farmers’ needs over the years.

“Our aim is to provide local farmers with a competitive priced and reliable collection service. The collection charges are extremely competitive across the board particularly where larger, mature animals are concerned.

“All our staff is trained to remove all fallen stock in a professional manner with the minimum of fuss and disturbance to the farmers involved. Dead animals represent an unwanted cost on every farm and it is our aim to make the removal cost effective and a straight forward process. They are trained in all bio security and environmental regulations.”

To carry out their business, Boyd’s operate a fleet of specialised lorries to provide an efficient and timely collection service to their clients, scheduling deliveries to achieve maximum reliability and efficiencies and adjusting collection patterns in real-time to respond to changing requirements.

“We continually invest in the latest transport equipment and technology ensuring we can meet all your transportation needs. The trucks are washed down after every load, which is in accordance with department regulations.”

A customer will be waiting a maximum of two days for a collection to be made as Boyd Haulage provide an efficient and reliable collection service to their client base.

“We guarantees a two-day turnaround for each collection request. All animals that are over 48months/4 years of age must be booked in via telephone to Foyle Proteins call centre for TSE sampling within 24 hours from time of death as required by DARD. All scrapie monitored sheep must be booked into Foyle Proteins call centre as required by DARD within 24 hoursfrom time of death.”

Boyd’s supply various sizes of wheelie bins to their customers in the agricultural sector. “There are three sizes of bins and they are 240 litre household bin, 360 litre bin and a 1100 litre industrial bin. We also collect 120-1100 litre bins of pigs and poultry and skips.”

Boyd Haulage offers all types of service contracts from one-off collections through to long terms contracted repeat collections. “We offer the different type of contracts to suit the customers’ needs whether it be a one-off collection or long term, we are here to oblige.”
