The agricultural sector can be closely associated to the engineering industry as the two can go hand in hand at times.
Many farmers want to be fabricators and generally every farmer has a welder in his possession. Machinery and plant are not devoid from breakdowns, while other structures need repairs from time to time.
However, when it comes to steelwork, many have opted to use the products supplied by Meath based Peleus Steel who specialise in the distribution and processing of abrasion resistant, high yield and specialist steels.
The company has many years’ experience behind as it was initially established by Cyril Parkes in 1982. As the sole agent for Abraservice U.K throughout Ireland, this business located in Duleek, Co Meath provides a wide range of products to a customer base that covers the 32 counties.
In 2007, the company was taken over by the Sullivan brothers Peter and Cormac. For this month’s edition of Irish Tractor, we profile the business and speak to Peter about how the acquisition came about.
The Sullivan brothers were previously involved in their father’s engineering company and Peter reveals that the taking over of Peleus Steel came about on a whim.
“Cyril would have done business with us for years and he would have always been in and out to us. One day, half joking I said to him would he not sell the business and retire,” said Peter.
“I thought nothing more of it and then months later out of the blue, Cyril’s wife rang and asked could we come up to see him, which we did.
“Cyril was in ill-health at this stage and he told us that his three sons had no interest in the business and he asked would we be interested in buying it. This took us by surprise, but we went back, discussed it and decided to go for it. We then had to meet representatives from Abraservice and its parent company IMS and thankfully that all went very well.”

• ABRO 400 & 500 would be the standard abrasion material that we supply with wear life of up to 8 times greater than that of mild steel.
• Creusabro 4800 & 8000 both have similar wear characteristics to the materials above but they have the ability to operate at higher working temperatures.
• ABRO M is a non magnetic material which contains 11-14% Manganese and has the ability to harden as it works.
• Duretal 35 is a high chromium carbide weld overlay plate which has a wear life of 20-30 times that of mild steel.
• Abratube pipe is an abrasion resistant pipe which is used for the transportation of abrasive materials such as quarry product, coal slurry, cement etc.
“We have a good partnership here with both Cormac and I looking after the sales end of the business and we have Barry who looks after the fabrication of all of our products in the workshop. When we bought Peleus first, it was a company who mainly dealt in the sale of straight plates to customers. We had come from an engineering background so it was a natural progression for us to take it a step further by offering our customers the alternative option of the finished product.
“We invested in a plasma cutting facility last year and it has helped to reduce lead times and improve our service to customers. While we do a lot of repeat business, our work is varied so it is very enjoyable and we’re happy with the direction that the company is heading.”
