Cathal Cogan Trading has been supplying quality machines to the construction, agricultural and waste disposal industries since opening its doors in Moone, Co. Kildare in January 2017. The dealer specialises in Volvo loaders which can be supplied new or second hand.
Loaders – also known as wheel loaders or loading shovels – are very much the name of the game at Cathal Cogan Trading, accounting for 90% of all sales. While the dealer is synonymous with Volvo loaders, it also deals extensively in other leading brands such as JCB, Daewoo, Doosan, Samsung, Hyundai, O&K, Zettelmeyer, Manitou, Matbro, Terex, Massey Ferguson, Ford, Moxy, Venieri, New Holland, Komatsu, Dieci, Merlo, Michigan, Sanderson, Liebherr and Ljungby Maskin.
“I can source any make of loader to suit the client’s needs and budget, but our preference is for Volvo,” Cathal Cogan explains.
“They’re an excellent all-round machine which stand the test of time and hold their value very well. The higher the hours, the better they seem to perform. Inside the cab, they’re comfortable to drive and also feature climate control in most cases. Climate control is a more sophisticated form of air conditioning which many of our customers insist on having.
“While the vast majority of the loaders I sell are second hand, I can also supply new. But we’re more into fresh stuff than new stuff, if you know what I mean. If someone is thinking of buying new, a loader with 1,500 hours usually suffices. But the best value to be had are machines that have 4,000 or 5,000 hours on the clock.”
Cathal Cogan Trading is committed to providing a professional and value-for-money service to meet the growing requirements of its customers along with knowledge and understanding of the industry that will ultimately benefit them. A comprehensive range of quality used machinery is stocked at all times, with Cathal having an excellent reputation for sourcing high-quality used loaders.
“Most of our loaders are sourced from Belgium, Holland, Spain and Italy where I have a network of contacts who I can call on if I need a particular machine,” the affable managing director continues.
“I find that loaders from the Continent are cleaner and are of a higher spec. Our loaders range from four to 20 tonnes, or from a L20 to L120H if you’re talking about Volvo. Our top-selling Volvo models are L60, L70 and L90. I only deal with exceptional, clean and tidy stuff with low hours.
“We stand over everything we sell and offer an excellent back-up service. Matris diagnostic software provides the full service history and hours of a Volvo loader.”
Cathal also supplies telehandlers, excavators and cherry pickers which are sourced from mainland Europe as well. He also stocks second hand Volvo attachments, wheels and even levers, and is an agent for ProDig Attachments. Based in Bagenalstown, Co. Carlow, ProDig manufactures a wide range of high-quality attachments for the agricultural, excavation, construction and recycling markets in Ireland and the UK.
In addition to sales, Cathal Cogan Trading can look after all your repair and service needs. These services will soon be catered for at a new state-of-the-art workshop which is currently under construction and is located on the same site as Kingswood Agri and Cormac Cogan Plant Sales, which are run by his father John and brother Cormac respectively.
“The three businesses are completely different and independent of each other,” Cathal stresses.
“There’s plenty of room for the three of us as we’re spread across a nine-acre site. My father, who has been selling machinery from the present yard since 1978, sells machinery such as dumpers, backhoes, teleporters, excavators and JCB loaders, and Cormac specialises in sales, hire and service of plant and equipment for the construction and quarrying industries. He deals in bigger machinery than I do.
“We’re in a great location just off Junctions 2 and 3 of the M9. We’re easy to access from any part of the country.”
Cathal boasts a growing customer-base in Ireland and the UK. His customers, who are a mix of agri contractors, grain merchants, fertiliser suppliers, beef and dairy farmers and waste management companies, include: Panda Waste, Drummonds, Quinn’s of Baltinglass, Thornhill Agri (Tullow), Roger Perry Agri Contractor (Athy), AG Ross Agri (Mallow), Paddy Joe Mulhearne Agri (Kilmeaden), Jim Good Agri Contractor (Mallow), Lynch Agri (Foynes), Paddy Burke Agri Contractor (Pallasgreen), Ballyalla Farms (Skibbereen), Barrow Automation (Bagenalstown), Coolmona Agri (Donoughmore), C&D Recycling (Gorey), Eddie Forde Agri Contractor (Kilcock), Keatley Concrete (Baltinglass), Ward & Ward (Birdhill), Kelly’s (Ballydesmond), MD Plant (Galway) and QME Mining Equipment (Navan).
While Cathal Cogan Trading has only been in business for four years, Cathal has been involved in all aspects of construction machinery sales since he was first sent to used machinery auctions in the UK and Europe to buy for the family business as a 16-year-old and without a driver’s licence. Since then, he has had hands-on experience in the purchase, sales, marketing, repair, dismantling and transport of all types and sizes of construction machinery.
The years he spent working for his father involved everything from agri and construction machinery to trucks, 4x4s and specialised plant such as crushers, screeners, demolition machines and recycling facilities.
When Cathal decided to set up his own business, it was always going to involve dealing in what he knew best, loaders, and specifically Volvo. Volvo loaders have been a constant in his life since his father moved away from importing combine harvesters and Massey Ferguson industrial loaders many years ago.
Cathal Cogan Trading’s opening hours are 9am to 6pm Monday-Friday and 9am to 1pm on Saturdays. However, Cathal often works outside these hours and is always ready to go on the road with his own truck and low loader if needed.
If you’re in the market for a Volvo loader, be sure to give him a call.
