Farm Waste recycling – Waste not, want not

3 Apr , 2018

Pat O’Sullivan of Farm Waste Recycling (FWR) Ltd works hand-in-hand with the IFFPG – Ireland’s only approved farm plastics recycling compliance scheme – to continuously provide a top class service in Kerry and Limerick.

Pat O’Sullivan of Farm Waste Recycling (FWR) Ltd always endeavours to serve his farming client base with the greatest efficiency and diligence.

Working under the umbrella of The Irish Farm Film Producers Group (IFFPG), he always goes the extra mile to ensure his valued customers are happy every aspect of his service and does everything in his power to deliver on his promises.

The IFFPG is the national farm plastics recycling compliance scheme.

Their role is to provide cost effective compliance to their members (companies that place farm film products on the market) and a comprehensive recycling service for farmers nationwide to ensure that they exceed national recycling targets as set by the government.

They do this by operating approximately 235 bring centres annually, as well as providing a farmyard collection service.

They are currently recycling in excess of 25,000 tonnes of farm plastics yearly, which equates to a national recycling rate of over 70%. They have been responsible for recycling over 250,000 tonnes of farm plastics waste since its establishment.

The IFFPG is a not for profit body, which is primarily funded by a recycling levy that they charge to their members. They receive additional funding through a weight based collection charge that farmers pay.

They pride themselves in providing cost effective compliance to their members and a comprehensive recycling service to farmers nationwide.

Based in Killorglin, Co Kerry, Pat O’Sullivan is the man to call if you are located in the Kingdom or Limerick and want to avail of these services.

He has earned a well-deserved reputation for reliability on the back of 17 years’ experience in this line of work and is not shy when it comes to rolling up the sleeves to get the job done.

“I’ve been doing this since 2000,” he revealed to Irish Tractor & Agri magazine, “I worked under my own name up until setting up the company in November 2013.

“I started working with the IFFPG in late 2005, early 2006. Back then I was covering County Kerry only and then took over in west Limerick. Five years ago I took over all of Limerick.”

FWR has eight employees on its payroll during the busy months (April to August) and Pat can collect and dispose of your silage wrap and sheeting, large fertilizer and feed bags, small fertilizer and feed bags, chemical drums and netting and twine.

He provides a cost-effective service for farmers to recycle their farm plastics waste and all farm plastics collected by Pat and the IFFPG are converted into new products such as refuse sacks, piping, damp proofing products and garden furniture.

“It has very much been a case of so far, so good,” he said. “When I started out in 2000, 160 tonne of farm waste was collected in Kerry the previous year. I spent the first two to three years working hard and talking to farmers, explaining to them what needed to be done. Within three years grew the business to 1400 tonnes.

“There has been massive growth since then and since Limerick came on board. Limerick is thriving, I’ve gone from 250 tonnes up to 1900 tonnes now at minute in Limerick. I’m collecting 3500 tonne per year.

“I’d mostly be collecting out from mart and farm yards as well as quarries. We have four lorries, a tractor, trailer and crane on the go as well as a truck loader.”

Pat, who is assisted in the running of the business by his partner Emily Ahern and 16-year-old son Daire, added: “It’s a quiet time of year now, the bring-centre finished in August. They’ll start up again next April but I’m available at the minute to help out anyone who missed out on the bring-centre.

“I’d always be looking at ways to expand the business. I’m hoping to get into some other type of materials to keep us going during the quiet winter months.”

Customer service, underpinned by a personal touch, is at the core of everything that Pat and the team at FWR Ltd does.

“I have a lot of elderly farmers on my books and I help them out in any way I can. You have to look after customer and I’m fortunate to have thousands of customers. Each and every one of them can ring me direct and I’ll do anything I can to help out.

“I’d like to thank all of our customers for their loyalty and sticking with me down through the years. I  would also like to thank Matt Wren Haulage for the support that he gives us when the pressure comes on.”
