Trevor Nuzum Construction & Plant Hire marks 30 years

9 Dec , 2020

Based in Arklow, Co Wicklow, Trevor Nuzum Construction & Plant Hire, which now trades as TDN (Trevor and David Nuzum Construction & Plant Hire Ltd),  has been providing its customers with unrivalled farm building solutions for 30 years now. Irish Tractor & Agri touched base with the man himself recently to learn more.

This year marks 30 years in business for Trevor Nuzum Construction & Plant Hire and right now the Co Wicklow-based company is as busy as it has ever been.

Based in Ballintombay, Arklow, Co Wicklow, the company employs six full-time staff. The hard work and dedication of the staff has played a key role in the success of the company. TDN has built a reputation over the years for constructing a wide range of agri buildings to the very highest standards.

Trevor Nuzum himself was good enough to some time out and explained to Irish Tractor & Agri all about his venture and the state of business at the moment.

“This year has been busy despite the lockdown and we’re very busy at the moment with the agricultural stuff,” said Trevor.

“We’d a few milking parlours that we needed to finish off which were deemed essential, so that kept us busy during lockdown.

“We were lucky in that way and we kept plugging away at silage pits and that to keeps us ticking over.”

It seems the range of services that Trevor Nuzum Construction & Plant Hire has to offer has come in handy this year in particular.

Today, Trevor and his son David oversee a business which does everything from groundworks and site development through to concrete works.

Over the past three decades, the company has become known for high-quality, cost-effective, no-nonsense milking parlours, cubicle sheds, slated storage tanks, dung steads, retaining walls, laneways, etc.

Right now, Trevor and his team are working on a 130-bed nursing home in Cabra, Co Dublin, while a bit closer to home they’ve just started a new robotic milking parlour along with two 20-unit parlours.

Times are busy and they look like staying that way for a business which can provide all services in-house, while also supplying a keen plant hire service.

“We can offer a full service from plant hire to walking into a shed and putting the cows into it,” Trevor outlined.

Rewind back three decades and things were certainly different for Trevor Nuzum.

Having come from a family of dairy farmers, he would go on to attend Gurteen Agricultural and since then he has worked in construction and plant hire his whole life.

Trevor’s father had owned his own farm machinery dealership since 1968, so it’s not hard to see where his son’s initial interest in agriculture and machinery developed from.

In 1990, the interest would lead him towards taking the bold decision to go out on his own and set-up Trevor Nuzum Construction & Plant Hire.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Today, the company is thriving and boasts a superb fleet of modern machinery which is operated by a team of skilled, experienced, motivated and certified personnel.

All of the staff have at Trevor Nuzum Construction & Plant Hire have Safe Pass training, the relevant tickets for the machinery they handle, all qualifications required by the Department and operate to the highest levels of Health & Safety, delivering high-quality finished products, on time and within budget.

2020 has seen additions made to the company’s fleet, which include a new Case Excavator 145, a 2018 Komatsu DX, three 20-tonne excavators, two Cases and a CAT 320.

The company also operates with mini-diggers ranging from 3.2 tonne to 8-tonne in the machinery fleet, which is likely to see more additions in 2021 given the current rate of business.

Trevor Nuzum Construction & Plant Hire works with clients through every project and it has seen the company develop excellent working relationships with their customers.

Without the ongoing trust and support of the farming community, Trevor Nuzum Construction & Plant Hire would struggle to thrive as a viable commercial entity.

Trevor and David have always placed a major emphasis on communication and transparency and in turn it has helped to create a steady flow of repeat custom plus gain a reputation for excellent in their company’s work through word of mouth.

So, what has been the secret to continued success over these past 30 years?

For Trevor, having the right people in your workforce is always essential.

“I thinking picking good workers and picking good men has been a big part of it,” he pointed out.

“I’ve been lucky with a lot of the staff I’ve had here down through the years and we have a great team here at the moment.”

He continued: “I’ve always felt that giving the customer a good service is vital. We don’t leave until the farmer is happy and that’s stood to us over the years.”

Looking towards the months ahead, Trevor says he’s confident that business will continue to stay strong going forward.

“The first hope would be to get a bit of good weather before the winter really starts to set in.

“There’s a lot of farms out there that need upgrading, so I’d be confident enough about the months ahead. Hopefully, things will continue the way they’ve been going,” he concluded.
