Tir-Con Engineering Ltd is a design-and-build company, with an international reputation for providing the best solutions available today. Irish Tractor & Agri learned all about the Co Derry-based company from its founder and proprietor, Paul McGovern recently.

In June 2018, Tir-Con Engineering Ltd expanded its business to a new location in Moneymore, Magherafelt and it’s a move which has certainly paid off so far for Paul McGovern and his business.

Having previously been based in Draperstown, the company now boasts more than four decades of experience when it comes to the fabrication of steel-framed poultry, dairy and beef units.

Tir-Con has a reputation for quality and reliability, along with a long list of highly-satisfied customers all across the country.

Irish Tractor & Agri caught up with Managing Director Paul McGovern recently to learn more about this thriving business.

“We’d have 40 working here between subbies and those that are employed full-time,” Paul outlined.

“We’ve four steel work teams and two shuttering squads. We also have a grounds work team that works directly with us, so we can provide a turnkey project.”

Along with poultry, dairy and beef units, Tir-Con also specialises in industrial buildings, which are engineered to customers’ exact specification.

The company has also expanded successfully into other construction areas, including equestrian centres (having designed and built many equestrian units of varying sizes throughout Northern Ireland) and re-roofing projects of various sizes.

Quality solutions are offered on-site, wherever they are required.

For Paul, it had been his vision for his company when he set it up back at the turn of the millennium.

“The company was set-up in 2000 and is the largest manufacturer of steel and poultry houses in Ireland. We’ve erected over 600 steel houses since we’ve been established,” said Paul.

“Much of what we do here is repeat business with clients and it has grown through word of mouth.

“My son Paul jnr has become highly involved in the company. He has a degree in Construction Engineering and between the two of us we oversee the business.”

Each and every project undertaken at Tir-Con, irrespective of its size, commands personal involvement from the firm’s experienced team from inception to completion, and every solution is delivered to exact customer requirements.

Customers know they can rely on Tir-Con’s depth of knowledge and decades of experience to achieve the best results through every stage of the project – from producing plans and drawings, organising site meetings or liaising with sub-contractors right through to construction.

“Any men we have here have worked throughout Ireland and England,” Paul pointed out.

“We’ve a very experienced team of engineers and tradesmen here and carried out around 80 per cent of the most recent Moy Park expansion.

“We are currently embarking on a project for Belview Eggs, which is set to see a building erected for 60,000 laying birds. There’s set to be an opening day for that this June.”

Each farmer and producer has his own set of individual requirements, a set budget and a unique way of doing things, a flexible and versatile service is offered, with bespoke solutions commonplace.

By working in close partnership with its clients and processing a keen awareness of new changes and practices in the industry, Tir-Con Engineering Ltd is ideally placed to provide a building solution that will make a real difference to its clients’ bottom line.

“We have attention to detail and when we carry out a project, we do it right,” said the Managing Director.

“We are trustworthy and while we might not be the cheapest in the business, we always put a big emphasis on quality.”

It’s that emphasis on quality that has Tir-Con Engineering Ltd thriving as a business two decades on from its inception.

As the Irish market leader in steel-framed poultry house construction, Tir-Con continues to develop new ideas to improve both production and bird. They solely produce poultry units of steel-framed construction, which hold numerous advantages over their timber-frame equivalent. The benefits of these are increased capacity, lower maintenance requirements and ease of cleaning, while the units are also environmental-friendly.

Tir-Con will visit the site and design each building to the farmer’s specific requirements using the latest materials to enhance build quality.

“Our houses are made of Kingspan quad core installed panels with a 40-year guarantee. They have a U value of .008,” explained Paul.

“By specialising in steel frame poultry houses, we ensure that the ventilation systems work efficiently – that’s the good thing about erected airtight buildings.”

Working in conjunction with the UK multiples, Tir-Con, along with the poultry processors, has developed a new bird-friendly house known as the Select House. This incorporates natural daylight which can be controlled automatically.

Past developments include PVC roofing which increases the life span of the house, this PVC material used on the inside of the roof comes is from Brett Martin and comes with a 20-year guarantee so customers can be confident that they are a very high quality unit and the company’s innovative design uses less joints which minimises air leakage and heat loss.

Tir-Con provides solutions in state of the art Broiler, Free Range and Egg Laying units with an emphasis on High levels of air tightness and Bio-Security among the many priorities of the build.

Solutions are provided nationwide and no project – be it poultry, beef, dairy, industrial or equestrian units – is ever considered too large or too small.
