15 Nov , 2017

Synonymous with sourcing and supplying high-quality filtration, wear parts, cutting edges and lubricants, RedMac Plant & Engineering Supplies Ltd. have been serving the agri sector superbly since their inception 13 summers ago. We dropped into their Castlebar, County Mayo head office to discuss the excellent range of products and services provided with director James McDonnell.

Since its genesis in June, 2004, RedMac Plant & Engineering Supplies Ltd. has established itself as Ireland’s leading supplier of parts to the agriculture, construction, transport, marine, mining and forestry sectors. With locations in Castlebar, Killarney and Athlone, the company is a fully-endorsed importer and distributor of world-leading Donaldson filtration systems, MTG teeth and adaptors, Borox cutting edges and Fuchs lubricants.

They also stock other products such as hydraulic hoses and fittings, Esab welding equipment, greasing equipment, diesel pumps and hosing as well as a wide range of workshop consumables, offering nationwide coverage from three strategically-chosen locations and providing a next-day delivery service.

Customers are also offered an express hydraulic hose repair service at all three locations alongside a fuel testing service and solutions to all problems related to injection failure.

At the heart of the business are the four aforementioned agencies…

In conjunction with Donaldson, RedMac have a wealth of experience in filtration, customising their parts and service to suit the requirements of each customer. Donaldson are the world leader in the supply of filtration and exhaust systems to the OEM market and replacement parts to the aftersales market. RedMac carry more than 4,500 different filtration parts to service customers in the agriculture, truck and bus, construction, OEM and quarrying and mining sectors across Ireland.

Meanwhile, MTG manufacture high-quality teeth and adaptors for earth moving equipment and have developed renowned systems such as Fixmet, Kingmet and Starmet.

Borox have specialised in the production of ground engaging tools for excavating machinery for over 90 years. The Borox range of cutting edges is the most extensive in the market and is superbly suited for all applications and most major machine types.

With German roots, Fuchs is a leading independent supplier of lubricants, having developed, produced and sold lubricants for more than 85 years. As a lubricant specialist, Fuchs stands for performance and stability, safety, reliability, efficiency and cost savings. Fuchs has set new standards with XTL technology and RedMac Plant & Engineering Supplies Ltd. stock an extensive range of Fuchs lubricants for agricultural and construction machinery.

Director James McDonnell, who runs the company alongside Barry Redmond, reflects on the genesis of RedMac: “Myself and Barry used to work for Heneghan Plant & Engineering Supplies and we bought that out in 2004 and rebranded as RedMac. Things have gone very well for us since then and we’re extremely happy with the four main agencies.

“Filtration is our specialist area and we distribute Donaldson solutions nationwide, predominantly to the agriculture, construction and commercial (truck and bus) sectors. We also do hydraulic hose repairs, oils and greases, tools, trailer parts, welding supplies and general workshop consumables.

“Our main office is here in Castlebar and this is also where we have our main store / warehouse as well as a trade counter to serve local customers. We also have a trade counter in Athlone, while we trade as JR Spares in Killarney. Indeed, we have a very strong local trade counter business to complement the nationwide distribution of filters, wear parts, cutting edges and lubricants.

“MTG is a Spanish company specialising in wear parts and we distribute teeth and adaptors for them, while Borox are Swedish and we supply all of their weld-on and bolt-on cutting edges and wear strips.”

As well as their three outlets, Redmac Plant & Engineering Supplies Ltd. also have two reps on the road covering the 32 counties. Trade with the agri sector is brisk: “We were more of a plant hire and construction supplies company up until 2007/08 but then, when the recession took hold, we diversified more into the agri end of things and became strong in filtration, etc.,” James notes.

Redmac Plant & Engineering Supplies Ltd. are the only supplier of filtration solutions to Bord na Mona, who operate one of the largest tractor fleets in Europe, with up to 1,800 units. They also deal regularly with agri contractors, garages, agri and farm shops, plant equipment repairers and fitters and members of the general public.

Looking to the future, director James McDonnell is confident that the company can continue to progress and thrive by supplying a superb range of parts with the back-up of unrivalled levels of customer care: “The goal is to keep growing,” he confirms. “The last three years have been encouraging, with things starting to move again in construction, while we have also been working hard on the agri side. We had an exhibition at the National Ploughing Championships in 2010 and that helped us to break into the agri market. We did that show for five years and also exhibit at the Construction, Quarry and Machinery Show.

“If you look after customers, they will come back and do business again. We deal in top brands. Donaldson is a very famous filter company worldwide and they supply all the major OEMs like John Deere, New Holland, etc. They are first-fit specialists and their aftermarket filter is also extremely popular. It’s a brilliant agency which has been very successful for us and they are a great company to work with. All our brands are world-class, premium brands and we only associate ourselves with quality and strive for quality all the time.

“We have years of knowledge and experience of the equipment and can help sort out any filtration solution. We can steer customers in the right direction when it comes to filtration and our trade counters are all about service. Hydraulic hose repairs are a big part of that, too.”

Direct employment is generated for a team of eleven. “We have an excellent, loyal crew,” James concludes. “Any company is only as good as its staff and we’d be lost without them.”
