Catering for farmers’ machinery needs

10 May , 2018

With over 30 years’ experience, Naas Farm Machinery has established itself as a leading supplier of new and used tractors and agricultural machinery. Irish Tractor & Agri learned more about the business from its General Manager, Murt Murphy.

When George Delahunt first set-up Naas Farm Machinery back in 1986 he’d have hardly anticipated being in the same game all these years later, but, by virtue of its success, it’s still going strong today.

Based in the famous north Kildare town, the company continues to build on the glowing reputation it has amassed over the past three decades as main agents for Deutz-Fahr in the area.

Murt Murphy has been working with Naas Farm Machinery for over 28 years now and took some time from a busy schedule to tell Irish Tractor & Agri all about the business.

“We’re based in Maudlins Industrial Estate, Monread Road, Naas Co Kildare and the business is established 31 years this year,” explained Murt.

“We’ve got six staff working here, including myself, and I’ve been General Manager since 1989. The company is owned by George Delahunt and his wife Janet.”

As well as being leading suppliers of agri and farming machinery, Naas Farm Machinery also carries out service and repairs and have a large range of spare parts.

The company has been proudly associated with the Deutz-Fahr brand since its inception, with George keen to bring a good product on board from the word ‘go’.

Now, 31 years later, it’s still the leading product to pass through and from the company’s gates and that doesn’t look like changing any time soon, having built up a strong relationship from the start.

“We are main agents for Deutz since we opened our doors here,” Murt outlined.

“George had initially worked for IAM but when he decided to start up his own business in 1986 he went with Deutz and hasn’t looked back since. I had been working in the industry for about five years before joining George here.”

Murt has been immersed in Naas Farm Machinery the majority of his working life and, as one could imagine, during that time he has seen the company come through both good times and bad.

During the recent economic downturn business understandably suffered with clients unable to secure the required loans to purchase new machinery.

It was in those years that George decided to take on Kuhn products and things have improved considerably since, along with the aid of the economic turnaround.

“It has been a struggle in recent years with the downturn and that but we have seen an upturn in the sales of grass machinery,” said the General Manager.

“We decided to take on Kuhn machinery five years ago and that has seen an improvement recently.

“People weren’t buying machinery three of four years ago with so many banks tightening up and that definitely had an effect on us. But they are starting to lend out again now so things are picking up and hopefully they’ll continue to do so.”

Another major positive for Naas Farm Machinery in more recent years has been their presence online.

The company has made good use of sites such as DoneDeal.ie to reach customers nationwide with their second hand machinery and they’re willing to go the distance when it comes to a sale as well.

“We cover all over really and we’d be bringing our machines as far as Limerick for some clients,” Murt stated.

“DoneDeal.ie has been fabulous for us in moving second hand machinery and we’d also be taking on a lot of second hand tractors from Holland, which would have started for us when George went out there 15 years ago.”

Now that’s going the distance. But what is it that sets Naas Farm Machinery aside from its competitors?

Murt feels a lot of it has to do with the quality of products that they’re carrying down at Maudlins Industrial Estate.

That quality and top class service has helped the company to gain a glowing reputation down through the years, according to the GM, who will soon be coming up on 30 years working with the company himself.

“We’re constantly building relationships with new clients and I think a large part of the reason why they choose us first is because of the quality of product that we’re selling,” he said

“Kuhn has really stood the test of time and Deutz has a very good product and reputation – people tend to come back to them.

“We are 31 years in business now and we keep a good store of spare parts and our customer service is excellent.”

All the ingredients are there, along with a first-rate reputation, so where to from here for Naas Farm Machinery?

“We have a couple of other brands here and for now we’ll just concentrate on what we’re selling here,” Murt explained.

“Fleming is another long-term brand that I should mention and we also have Major along with Malone. We continue to do work with IAM as well and at the moment our most popular product here would be the Kuhn-produced fertiliser spinner called Ranch Raunch.”
