Catering for all your slurry storage and handling needs

8 Jun , 2015

Operating from Kilcullen, Co. Kildare, Tank Storage Systems is a market leader in the supply and installation of Permastore tanks and all aspects of slurry handling. The long-established family-run business supplies new and used tanks for the agricultural market along with umbilical systems for slurry handling, pumps, hose and other ancillary products.

The company was set up in 1981 by Englishman Graham Sage who is joined in the business by his wife Anna, son Ben and five staff. Graham made Ireland his home after first coming here in the 1970s with the Howard Rotavator Company.

“I was only meant to stay a year, but I’m still here 40 years later and loving it,” he smiles.

As an agent for Permastore, Tank Storage Systems has been supplying the agricultural sector with glass-lined steel slurry stores for over three decades. Permastore has long been recognised as the leading name in slurry store management and pollution control in farming and other sectors. Permastore have a range of tank and silo designs which are engineered and manufactured to the highest international standards. These tank kits are supplied and installed by Tank Storage Systems across the country.

Permastore tanks and silos combine the strength and engineering flexibility of steel with the corrosion resistance of glass. A wide range of tanks and management systems are available to suit any farm size. The systems installed by Tank Storage Systems have storage capacities ranging from 100,000 gallons up to two million gallons.

The slurry storage systems can be supplied with a complete package of tank, reception pit, pump, mixer, access ladder and platform. They contain farm waste safely and securely to protect water sources throughout the world. Above ground installation of the main tank means there is no risk of hidden damage or leaks, giving lasting peace of mind. They are safer too for children and animals than the traditional ground stores or slurry pits.
“The days of the concrete pits are long gone. They were highly dangerous and were also prone to leakages,” Graham explains.

“Slurry has to be stored and contained, and the simple way of storing large volumes of it is to have a Permastore storage system installed. There is no need to excavate – all that you need is a level site. The beauty of our storage systems, which can be as high as seven metres, is that you can store a large volume of slurry in a small area.

“While dairy, beef and pig farmers are our main customers, we also supply to abattoirs, creameries, local authorities and a broad range of industries. These systems can store any liquid.”

He continued: “We have the wherewithal to extend storage tanks, take them down and rebuild them. Parts and maintenance are all part of the service as well.”

Tank covers are available at a low cost to significantly reduce odours and cut ammonia losses by as much as 90 per cent. Farmers can also save money by reducing the size of the tank by around 15-25 per cent depending on local rainfall and the volume of slurry to be stored. With less nitrogen lost to the atmosphere, the slurry will have a higher fertiliser value and thus reduce farm bills for commercial fertilisers.

The Aeromix product that Tank Storage Systems offers mixes and conditions slurry by injecting air into the base of the slurry store. Air is metered and injected into well-defined areas of the store, one area at a time. This system reduces ammonia and methane emissions and removes the need for agitation, which has been the cause of many deaths on Irish farms over the years.

Tank Storage Systems are also agents for Albers Aligator slurry bags. These bag tanks can provide up to 5,000m3 of problem-free slurry storage. The bags are ideal for weak subsoil, there is no loss of capacity to rainwater, they don’t disfigure the landscape and don’t need a foundation to be dug.

Tank Storage Systems also specialises in anaerobic digestion (AD), with Ben spending the last five years working in the AD industry in both Germany and the UK. With the introduction of Government incentives, anaerobic digestion is now a viable technology that can offer huge potential for revenue generation for farmers and waste operators alike.

“Anaerobic digestion is a growing sector for us. I like the concept of it and Ben has considerable knowledge of it from the time he spent working for a German AD technology provider,” the affable managing director says.

Apart from offering consultation on biogas projects, Tank Storage Systems can also install complete digester systems. This includes the digester tank, gas membrane and a range of mixing systems for the digester.

Another well-known brand for which Tank Storage Systems is an agent is Bauer. For over 80 years, Bauer has been manufacturing pumps, mixers and irrigators for clean water, waste water and slurry. Bauer’s complete product range offers customers optimised choices, including innovative slurry technology.

The most recent innovative product from Bauer is the Green Bedding separator. This system separates the fibres from cow slurry and squeezes it to a dry matter content of up to 38 per cent. This allows the product to be used as bedding material in the cubicles resulting no requirements to purchase any additional bedding material. Apart from the obvious cost savings customers are finding the cows are cleaner and most importantly are more comfortable.

Tank Storage Systems can supply a wide range of umbilical systems, separators, mixers, pumps, hoses, spreaders and green bedding. Every aspect of slurry containment and handling is covered.
