A steely determination

The company specialises in the fabrication and erection of structural steel and cladding for the industrial, commercial, agricultural and leisure sectors.

Established in the early 1950’s by John Joe O’Dwyer, this company has grown to become a leader in its field of expertise and not only do the supply their products and services to the U.K and Ireland, but to mainland Europe also.

A few years back, there was a management buy-out of the company and Sean Dalton, Matt Ryan, Richard Walsh and John Hanly became directors of O’Dwyer Steel.

For this month’s edition of Irish Trucker, we profile the company and speak to John about the success of the business and the changes he has seen over the years.

From their purpose built six acre modern fabrication facility is in Dundrum, Co. Tipperary, the company complies with all regulations and legislation.

“We would have all the necessary certificates to manufacture our products from the department spec S101 standard to the E.U and C.E traceability markings that are coming into the industry,” said John.

“There is a lot more paperwork these days, but it is for the benefit of the industry and we have met all the requirements asked of us,” he added.

With over 60 years’ experience in the fabrication and erection of a wide range of structural steel buildings for the various sectors, O’Dwyer Steel have established a first-class reputation within this industry through a balance of competitive prices, commitment to quality, customer satisfaction and proven capabilities.

“We currently operate throughout Ireland and have expanded our customer base to include projects in the UK and France. Our manufacturing is carried out in our environmentally friendly workshop by our fully qualified team of machine operators, fabricators, and coded welders.

We source all of our materials from long established, quality suppliers and can offer lengthy warranties to all our customers. Client lists include building firms, consulting engineering practises and corporations throughout Ireland and the UK.”

Health and Safety is of course a big issue and O’Dwyer’s leave no stone unturned when it comes to ensuring that all requirements on this front are met.

“It is the policy of O’Dwyer Steel to carry out all works in conformance with all Health & Safety Legislation, Construction regulations and insurance requirements.”

When it comes to farm building, the Tipperary based firm are unrivalled in the south as their services have been required all over Munster and further afield up to as far as Roscommon and over to Meath.

“We have a wealth of experience in the agricultural sector and about 60% of our work would be in this area. From the design stage right until the work is completed, we work with the customer to ensure that they are happy with the work we are doing.

Our aim is to make the process of purchasing your building as smooth as possible, while also achieving the end result you will be expecting and be proud of. We offer all our customers assistance with the design, planning and choosing of the correct materials. Our buildings are detailed by our experienced team of steel detailers. All units are designed to meet your needs and intended use. A full after sales service is also provided.

“The housing of livestock, dairy, beef, poultry and pigs would be where we do most our work, but we have completed some big projects in other industries as well.”

Depending on how busy they are, O’Dwyer’s employ in the region of 80-100 people, all of who are highly trained in their area of expertise.
“We would have a very experienced workforce, many of who have been with us years now. They have played a huge part in the success of the company.”

O’Dwyer steel has built an impressive reputation for supplying structural steel solutions to clients to not only the agricultural industry, but to the commercial and sports sectors too.

From leisure complexes, viewing stands to club houses and community centres, every project is given the same attention to detail from start to finish.

“One of the biggest sports project was supplying the steelwork to Thomand Park, the home of Munster rugby, while we also have worked on Semple Stadium in Thurles. We have been involved with main contractors, specialist sub-contractors and consulting engineering practices; working with all to ensure that quality is delivered all the time.”

The company also the sole Irish distributors of the secure windbreakers manufactured by Thomas & Fontaine LTD. Rapid fit windbreaks with ratchet tensioning system and they can be used for permanent or temporary weather protection and ventilation.
