A solid base

The manufacture of quality concrete products is a specialised job carried out by some businesses across Ireland. However, when it comes to experience not many can match the quality produced by W&M Kiely Ltd.

This family run business has been supplying top quality concrete products to a large customer base for almost five decades now and their dedication to quality and customer satisfaction has never waned throughout that period.

Established in the early 1970’s by Bill and Michael Kiely, the company’s ability to being able to adapt to the many changes within the industry has been one of the main reasons for their success.

There have been many amendments to the legislation overseeing the industry also and W&M Kiely have strived to meet and exceed all demands of them.

All the products manufactured at the plant in Blarney, Co Cork are made of steel reinforced precast concrete and meet all the requirements of the building and agricultural industries.

Every product manufactured at the plant is monitored through a computerised batching system to ensure that the quality is not dropped at any stage.

The range of products produced by W&M Kiely Ltd is endless and in short the manufacture BioKast systems, a wide range of tanks including septic and water tanks for the agricultural, domestic and commercial markets as well as cattle, pig and other sized slats.

The majority of their work centres on the farming industry and General Manager William Kiely revealed to the Irish Tractor that they were pleased by the direction that the company was heading.

“As the majority of the work we do is for the farming industry, our work can be very seasonal and winter can be a quiet period for us, but now that Spring is here and the weather has improved, our order book is fairly full for the next few months,” said William, whose father Bill is still involved in the day to day running of the business as is his sister Susan.

“We manufacture mainly a standard range of products such as slabs, slats, tanks and beams to name just a few. Quality has always been our main goal and that is something that we take great pride in. We were one of the first companies in Ireland to get C.E approval and we adhere to any new legislation that is implemented.

“Our double chamber septic tanks are EN 12566-1 certified and comply with the EPA’s code of practice. All tanks for farm use, 1000 – 4000 gallon, have heavy duty covers and are fully grant approved.

“We began manufacturing slatted flooring for Cattle, sheep and pigs in 1990.  The Cattle & Tractor slats range in sizes from 7’6″ to 16’6″.  The sheep and pigs slats can be made to order depending on the size you require, from 3′ up to a maximum of 9’6″ long.  All slats are manufactured to the highest specifications and are grant approved.”

In the farming and pig industry there has been various grants for development work that W&M Kiely Ltd have benefited from.

“Last year Pig Farmers availed of a grant available to them and from that we would have supplied a number of pig slats.

“We manufacture all products ourselves at our plant here in Blarney and we do all our own installation work. There are 14 employed here and most are from the area. We also do our own in-house training and all employees would have a Safe Pass under Health and Safety regulations.

“There would be a very low turnover of staff here and many of the employees would be here with us years. We value our employees and are conscious of the work that they do.”

The Kiely BioKast wastewater treatment system was designed and patented by William Kiely Snr. It is EN 125663 certified and complies with all county council and planning requirements. It is a large capacity reinforced concrete tank and proves to be one of the most durable and reliable systems on the market.  All maintenance of BioKast systems is carried out directly by our staff.

“The system has proven to be very popular among customers. One area that we are very busy in is replacing existing tanks that were put in years ago. We are also manufacturing an 8,500 litre tank, and we produce tanks from 3,000 to 18,000 litres.”

William revealed that the company hopes to expand further in 2014 and focus on the growth in manufacturing cattle slats as well as pre-cast walls
“We are always looking at products we can manufacture and we are building a pre-cast house at the moment, while we also want to push the cattle slats more and the domestic tanks, which is a market, we feel we can push more into it. We are aiming to increase our sales by 50% more in that area.

“We have the full range of concrete products. Our customers know what to expect when they order something off us and the customer base has grown through word of mouth. As I said, producing quality products and ensuring the customers are satisfied is always our main goal.”

The customer base spreads far and wide with many being repeat customers. “We cover the Cork, Kerry, Tipperary, Waterford and Limerick areas. All products delivered and fitted.”
